Golf..... Damn, the things I miss.

We've got a makeshift driving range out here. It doubles as a rifle range. We'll drive balls out to 200-250 yards and then shoot machine guns. It's really not a bad deal.

Big Smoothie (aka snafu) was wished for my death on more than one occasion I'm certain. Not because he disagrees with me on pretty much every conceivable level of moral and ethical principle, but for no other reason than the fact that I wear the uniform of the United States Army. Yea, it's sad but true.

However, one good thing I take away from his posts. For every one of his outlandish and preposterous statements, there are at least 10 other people who post an opposing view. It's quite refreshing to see the vast majority stand up and squash him like a bug.

However, this thread really isn't about him.

I don't understand why people who disagree politically have to be "enemies." I believe that if I stated my beliefs on a message board I would immediately be labeled a terrorist or US hating commy or what have you. But similarly if one were to do the same for their beliefs I might consider them a blindsighted, close minded authoritarian or whatever.

But in truth, to fully understand any point of view one would have to spend much more time investing and exploring my opinions and influences than is provided by a single, biased paragraph that I can write (or anyone would read) on a message board. My side may have good and bad points, as does the opposing view, and neither is all good or all bad- as we so like to wrap our little world in. It is impossible to judge a belief as good or bad. Much less when based on some trivial surface revealed in a single, half assed message board post. Beliefs are like glaciers, and when we post them we only expose the tip of a much larger, inconceivable premise. But nobody wants to believe that they can't fully understand the world, right? God, we need closure like we need oxygen.

And if I'm wrong, is that such a great reason to hate me as an individual? Am I more responcible for my genetic and environmental influences than you are? Is anyone? Can't we all agree that everyone, ourselves included, are imperfect, fallable, hypocritical, self-rightous assholes?

btw, that's not directed at any one person. I just read something about someone not getting along cuz they're in the army or whatever, I don't know I barely read anything. I just felt ranty and this whole artificial Vice President choosing bullshit got me annoyed.

I think the controversy around Smoothy is his historic statements.

His open hostility towards men and women in the armed forces has turned him into a lightning rod of sorts.

There are a lot of people out there who are uber supportive of the military and if you go and openly wish the death and dismemberment of military members it's bound to invite some counter-attack. THAT is just one of the reasons you see such open antipathy towards Smoothy.

Thx for the response. One of my biggest gripes with all this political BS going about right now is that my reponses, while I often have an opinion, tend to be middle-ground so as conflict doesn't neccisarily have to be a result, and as such my posts never get commented on. The only way to get read, quoted, and considered a valuable opinion is if it's some one-sided, extreme response that is worth starting a fight over, but no one ever has anything for the guy that spent the time to repond politely disagreeing but acknowledging your fine points.

Seriously though... Air assets are at a premium these days. There's a whole lot of mobility going on.

We've got a make-shift driving range set up behind the barraks as well. We set up some sun-shade nets as a back stop. It works ok.

My initial idea of setting up on top of the barracks and driving balls into the detainee compound got shot down way early.

Bury them up to their necks and make a nice putt-putt course, have a hole where you gotta bounce it off the back of one guys head and into anothers mouth things like that....having them buried will ensure they can't escape...
