The gaffe is not important, although some of the less sophisticated people may focus on this.

The election is full of gaffes. Candidates talk every day. The campaign has gone on, in reality for 22 months.

his religion is unimportant. thinking of himself as muslim, but claiming Christianity to garner acceptance and votes would be.

I honestly do not believe Obama is a closet-Muslim, for many reasons.

The main reason is that being a closet-Muslim (crypto-Muslim) and practicing another relgion (e.g. Xtianity) is against the rules of Islam.

    It's against the rules.

A Muslim cannot leave Islam and convert to another religion, also.

There is absolutely no evidence that Obama was ever a Muslim or practiced Islam.

    Like I said before.....low-info voters.

I don't think the guy is a closet muslim either, but I don't think that is the issue. Just because it is a against the rules of Islam doesn't mean shit. You think muslims never break muslim law? How about rape? do muslims believe it is wrong to rape? do some muslims rape? I know Mormons who drink, and Mormons as a faith do not believe in the consumption of alcohol.

I know and have watched muslims convert to Christianity. so yes it does happen. you think they give a damn about muslim rules if they no longer believe in Allah? The answer is only as much as it effects their family relationships if living in a western country, or if they are going to be killed if still living in an eastern one.

If he was ever muslim or not i don't know, and, i truthfully don't really care. I think that he does have strong ties to Islam in his past. And if he does think of himself as muslim, but now outwardly shows Christianity for votes and acceptance I think it goes a long way in showing his character.

I also think that this guy could commit murder and you would still defend him, but that is a whole different discussion.

A lot of politicians fake their Christian credentials. Sadly, you have to be a Christian if you're going to be nominated for President in the US. Remember Bill Clinton walking into and out of church with his "Holy Bible" in his hand for all of the cameras to see?

And Obama is playing the Christian card to for similar reasons. I think he also has to play his Christian "credentials" moreso than other candidates because of his name, his father, etc.

I also think that this guy could commit murder and you would still defend him, but that is a whole different discussion.
True it's a different discussion. I am for Obama but just barely. He's not a good and golden as the Demos want us to believe.

But if you look at the politicians we've had over the last several decades, very few are ones we could say were honest and sincere.

You don't have to be, but if you want to be elected, you better be. The majority of the voters in this country are and will not vote for someone if they aren't.

Is it such a bad thing that voters in the US want their elected official to have a similar belief system?

    True.

And this is what I don't like about American Presidential politics.

American politicians should not wear their religion or "alleged" religion on their sleeve.

But they have to, and they do.

no, i disagree. I dont have any problem wanting my elected officials having the same basic belief system I do. If I don't want an atheist running my country it is my voting right to express that belief. For better or worse the US is still a Christian country(I think for the better). we have many members of other religions living here and that is fine, but the country was founded on Christian principals, and the majority of Americans are of the Christian faith.

I agree.....this country was founded by our forefathers who believed in God and on the christain faith. If others choose not to believe that, fine. But I think the majority of the country wants it.

Who cares if an atheist is running the country.

Many politicians that claim to be Xtian, are not real Xtians, IMO.

Many Americans who claim to be Christian are actually not. It makes them feel good to think they are Xtian, and it's good to be seen as a Xtian.

And that is the problem. The Puritan influence is in many aspects of American culture.

Again, the "religious" politicians are often just playing the role - because of the voters.

Puritan influence? No, the influence is the Judao Christian principles the country was founded on. So, what's so wrong with wanting to preserve the principles the country was founded on? How is trying to be a good person and thus a good leader a "problem"?

    Yes, Judeo-Xtian, and yes, Puritanism.

Principles of the founding were not as religious as people think. Religion was used as it always has been.

you seem to have difficulty typing Christian.

and any study of the writings of the founders will show a undeniable Christian influence. to try and deny, or downplay this only shows a gross ignorance, or a deliberate attempt to misrepresent facts. For the purpose i can only assume being to make oneself feel better.

Religion was one of many factors.

The US has changed in many ways. Xtianity has many issues historically, and with the religion that I don't like, but that is another topic.

Politicians should keep their religion to themselves like they do in the UK and Europe.
