ALBANY - Barack Obama's once-commanding lead in New York has shrunk to just 5 points, a poll released Monday shows.

The Siena College poll shows Obama leading McCain 46% to 41%.

The five point margin is down from 18 points in June in a state considered among the most heavily Democrat in the nation.

"As voters begin to focus on the race, New York's overwhelming Democratic enrollment advantage is not reflected in how voters tell Siena they plan to vote," Siena poll spokesman Steve Greenberg said.

Ronald Reagan was the last Republican presidential candidate to win New York, taking it in 1984.

Just under 80% of the 627 likely voters surveyed by Siena said they believe McCain is thoroughly or somewhat qualified to be president, compared with 67% who said the same about Obama.

Some 70% felt that Obama's running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden, is qualified to be president, while only 47% thought GOP nominee Sarah Palin is qualified to be president.

Obama has a 56% to 32% favorabilty-to-unfavorability rating, compared with 50% to 37% for McCain.

Biden and Palin have the same favorability rating in New York - 46% to 26%.

On the issues, New Yorkers believe Obama is more likely than McCain to revitalize the economy, end the war in Iraq, improve education, and better healthcare.

But by a 54% to 33% margin, poll respondents said McCain would be better at keeping America safe from terrorism and enhancing the country's strength in the world.

On personal attributes, New Yorkers believe McCain is more patriotic and has more experience, integrity, and leadership qualities than Obama.

Obama is seen as more intelligent and compassionate.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percent.

It will be pretty remarkable if Obama loses. I still expect him to win, but if he doesn't it will be an outright rejection of the media & hollywood.. that would be fantastic.

Not to mention Obama's permanent exit from the nationwide spotlight.

I really don't think he will win but I do think he'll make another run for it.

This should be really simple, stop over complicating it.

I think if he loses, he's done. Everything is in his favor this year. Generic Democratic ballot by 10 points, more Democrats registered, unpopular President, unpopular war, majority of Americans say we're on the wrong track, mainstream media & Hollywood blatantly supporting his campaign, record-breaking donations, and he finds a way to lose?

Hillary would have won this year (with Barack as her VP). Democrats were weary about him the first time.. they'd never give him another chance after losing the "un-loseable" year.

I also predict that if he does lose, all we're going to hear is that America is racist... can't be that people don't like him or disagree with him.. has to be because he's black.

Again, I say Democrats are fools. They should have nominated Hillary & they would have had the White House for 16 years. Now, the Republicans could potentially have it for 12-16 more.

I don't think this Country is ready for a black President, I think any mistake he makes will be amplified, he'll be second guess to hell, instead of racially uniting us they will be a bigger divide, he'll be tested by foreign countries and..and..and...

I really thought Hillary was going to win but somehow she didn't, I really never understood the hate people have for her.
