Body Dismorphia (bigorexia): A Good Thing?

I feel that most of us can be pretty hard on ourselves when we are not where we want to be physically, whether we're not cut enough or not big enough. I think the average person may look at us and be quick to say we have self-image problems, though I know most of us simply consider this to be dedication. In fact, I feel you should never be happy with yourself; that one should never stop striving to improve themselves (whether it be taking classes or exams to add further value to yourself in your career field, or trying to put on an extra ten pounds because it will boost your self-confidence). I like that when we generally think of ourselves as being out of shape, that this is what the average person would consider themselves as being in "good shape." I mean, let's be real, there are no additional health benefits when you drop below a certain bodyfat percentage, and there are no additional health benefits to being extremely muscular. But we still strive to get to that point.

So I say a little body dismorphia (bigorexia) is good.

Bigorexia affects as many as 90% of bodybuilders.

    There is no cure.

Only your continuing support through donations of food and, um ... "supplements" will keep this terrible affliction under control.

Who cares? If it's not affecting my life and health negatively, then I would tell anyone saying that to stay the hell out of my business.

Odds are they'll be telling you this while they're eating a McShitlet too.

Body dysmorphia is no good, but people are often labeled with "bigorexia" when they just are disciplined towards reaching a goal.

It's often a term used by cynical out-of-shape folks, but sometimes they are right. Having a perpetual negative view of your body isn't healthy. If you aren't happy, you don't have much.

I prefer to feel positive about the ways I have changed myself into. I also feel positive about furthering the process. At times I get a bit negative, but that is life.

    QFT.

Bignorexia is serious. The problem is not the goal of becoming bigger and leaner, but the fact you are unaware of and displeased with your body's current state.

I get tinges of this sometimes, i look in the mirror and see no muscle mass or anything.

Only happens during periods of stress or something though, usually im the opposite and parade the guns and abs around the fat fucks that seem to saturate society today.

It is a question of 'how you feel' when you look at yourself in the mirror. There are no additional health benefits to having a full head of hair either, but given a chance, most balding guys would leap at a cure if there was one.

I definitely have it and I can't say I'm at all angry about it.

Sure, sometimes it puts me in a mood, but if I go out on Friday and Saturday and look at myself on Sunday and think I look like a piece of shit, it just makes for a more intense workout that night or Monday morning.

I have a severe case of body dismorphia sometimes, but not always. If i feel good, then I know I look good, but if I feel bad I think I look bad. Its weird.

I've been struggling with something like this for the last year or so...

The only activity I do right now which lends itself to being "big"
is working out in the gym... And I miss being as BIG and STRONG as I used to be say 10yr ago...

But the rest of the activities I do, lend themselves to me being leaner, lighter, and faster... MMA, HIKING, RUNNING, CLIMBING.

So I tear myself between bulking and leaning periods
which I don't think is extremely healthy.

I've actually never let this kind of thing bother me.
I'm by no means in perfect shape, hell I think it'd be stretching to say I'm even in good shape, but I guess that would depend on what scale you were using. In comparison to the general population I'm in pretty damned good shape... compared to most of the people on here, I'm a fat shit.
    I'm ok with that though.
I'll never compete, and I have no one to impress, so it's not a big deal in my book.
