I am a total PC/Windows guy, but I could not resist switching from a Windows Mobile smart phone to an Apple iPhone, and I must say I now understand the hype behind the iPhone, I love this thing! I am just amazed at the genius behind its design and usability, its amazing.

Here is how it works in Canada, I dont much about the states.
You have to get in a 3 year contract, thats like $40 a month, + about $80 to fix the plan and get your sim card fixed and iphone activated. You pay $200 to get the iphone. And you pay another $30 a month for the 'data plan' which is stupid.
So you get stuck in a plan, pay about $70 a month for the regular bill + data plan (more if you use your minutes or in better plans then 250mins a month).
I heard in the states you pay only once for the data plan. And we have only one phone company that sells iphones so no options there.

See I told you it's a pretty sweet gadget, I was thinking of hacking mine to add anything I want put all the apps I want are in iTunes. This one called Evernote lets me keep my writings synced on my iPhone, my home PC and my work PC and anywhere I can access my account online. The good thing is it doesn't store it on my phone but I could if I wanted to but I have a lot of music on there since my BMW can access the iPod in my phone and let me sort though and play the songs....even with the steering wheel controls. I love the touch screen though it's absolute genius. I also have the Tilt Meter app that uses the accelerometer to find the angle for me which is handy for finding the right tilt of a solar array on a given roof pitch, it also tells me if somethings level. There's also an app that lets you use the touch screen as a remote on your PC using your WiFi.....haven't tried it put plan on it.....
Oh yeah you can get books also I have a couple Kafka's in mine right now...
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I am not sure about every carrier, but both T-Mobile and AT&T require a 2 year contract, I will be paying about the same for my iPhone with AT&T as I paid T-Mobile using a Windows mobile phone, I have to have internet, and I don't know of any carrier that does not charge extra for that. The one nice thing about AT&T is they have roll over minutes, which T-Mobile did not.
I purchased the Sprint Instinct about a month ago. I did a side by side with the Iphone and they seemed about equal. The Instinct also comes with Sprint TV with the NFL, Nascar and a few other channels at no additional charge.
The best thing is the plans are on average $50 cheaper than the Iphone and the phone its self was only $79.95.
Now the Iphone has a couple of tweaks the Instinct doesn't have but those were not of interest to me.
If you're interested in the Iphone check this one out first and try to do a side by side before you run with the pack and get the Iphone.

I wanted an Iphone but I really, really hate the touchscreen. I have a Blackjack II and love it.

here is another good iPhone knockoff: 8GB Sciphone i68
the new blackberry is supposed to be pretty good, its coming out on verizon. my friend said he will ditch the iphone for it.
im with tmobile right now
