This is why I stay home on Back Friday

The more I know people the more i like animals

Black Friday took a grim turn when a New York Wal-Mart employee died after bargain hunters broke down the doors to the store, pushing him to the ground.

The 34-year-old male employee was pronounced dead an hour after shoppers breached the doors to the shopping center in Valley Stream, Long Island, about 5 a.m. Friday and knocked him down, police said.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," Jimmy Overby, the man's 43-year-old co-worker, told the New York Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too ... I literally had to fight people off my back."

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was also taken in for observation and three other shoppers suffered minor injuries during the incident, police said. The pregnant woman and the unborn baby were reported to be OK, said Sgt. Anthony Repalone, a Nassau County police spokesman.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., closed the store in Valley Stream for several hours after the stampede. It reopened shortly after 1 p.m.

Wal-Mart representative Dan Fogleman called the incident a "tragic situation" and said the victim came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.

"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority," Fogleman said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this difficult time. At this point, facts are still being assembled and we are working closely with the Nassau County Police as they investigate what occurred."

Police said about 2,000 people had gathered outside the doors before the Wal-Mart opened at the suburban location about 20 miles east of Manhattan. A crowd pushed the man to the ground at 5:03 a.m., three minutes after the store opened, leaving a metal portion of the door crumpled like an accordion.

Nassau County police spokesman Lt. Michael Fleming described the scene as "utter chaos." "This crowd was out of control," he said.

Criminal charges were possible in the case, but Fleming said it would be difficult to identify individual shoppers. Authorities were reviewing surveillance video.

    Capitalism at its finest!

Really though, that is atrocious. Condolences to the family.

Are there entrance regulations at these things? If not, there really should be. Maybe riot police, too. A nice rubber round to the gut will stop any shopper.

yeah, valley stream is the town I grew up in. Right on the border with Queens of New York City. I can tell you from personal experience that the people storming into the store were, how shall I be as PC as possible, animals, so it really doesn't surprise me that this happened.

The town itself isn't so bad, but the mall where this Walmart is draws its crowds mostly from nearby Queens and for anyone with knowledge of the new york area, the towns right on the border there aren't the nicest of towns....brings a whole new meaning to the term "black friday" if you know what I mean.

I was out there in the mix this morning with my GF and I didn't see any kind of frenzy anywhere, someplaces were crowded but everyone was as aloha as ever.....

I don't shop for Xmas at all, at any time.

    It's about consumerism.

Shopping is the national past time of the US.

Perhaps, but the towns closer to Nassau probably more, like Rosedale and Laurelton.

my kids will ask for something special they want for christmas but the going out and buying all kinds of crap is bullshit. parents need to put an end to kids expecting blind gluttonous consumerism.

it was the same here. I found it interesting, actually, that people seemed more pleasant and relaxed than most years. I've gone to malls and such this time of year and people are typically rushy and rude, but I was surprised that people actually obeyed right of ways, allowed me into traffic, opened doors, waited patiently in crowds, etc. Usually people are very shovey and hectic, but overall it was a pleasant experience even with the extra people.

Then I gotta be one crazy fucker. I went to get Tomb Raider: Underworld that I had on reserve at a Game Stop store and I had to wait like 3 hours in line. There was one casheer and the people in front of me were getting ready to riot.

I think it has to do with the economy and people wanting the holidays to go smoothly this year to help quell their fears, I'm betting in poorer neighborhoods the money crunch has people in a panic trying to get everything as cheap as possible so we'll see flare-ups in those areas but in all everybody just want's Christmas to cheer them up....it's been a rough year for many folks, being that my GF and I have been doing so well we plan on donating plenty to Toy's for Tots and other christmas charities....

I think the trampling could have been prevented had Wal-Mart decided to hand out tickets for the doorbuster deals hours before the event began. It seems like poor organization ontop of savageness that led to this incident. I wonder what everyone was lining up for. I looked at our Wal-Mart Black Friday ad and can't figure it out.

On a sidenote, we may no longer need to go out for Black Friday to get good deals at home. Yesterday, I bought a new 52" 1080p LCD and a Garmin Nuvi GPS from the comfort of my brother's home off of bestbuy.com. No crowds and free shipping . Only downside is that not all of the Black Friday deals were available online, so we did end up stepping out to pick up the PS3 bundle. But by that time, the Transformer BluRay for $9.99 was sold out everywhere we went.

Why would they do that? They want people to be worked up and insane. They want people to be freaking out about getting to wallmart for their sale. They want people to watch the news and see people lining up outside at 3:00am. This gets more people thinking that they are missing out by not being their, and the hope is they will get in the car and drive over there to wait in line.

The only logic and rationale going on here is by the marketing people of these stores who take advantage of our human psychological habits and built in thought processes.

    Doesn't work on everyone

I see people lining up at 3AM and go "fuck that". Not willing to deal with a tsunami of morons to save 30$ on an Xbox or whatever the hell they were selling this year.

Marketing stopped working on me when I became a cynical teenager. Now if I could just learn be be a positive cynic, I would have it all.

There's no way you'll catch me in a store the day before Christmas, that is the craziest time to be there with all the last minute people rushing in to get a gift they forgot.... Now the day after Christmas is a good day to shop we always get good deals on that day, though I'd never to try to exchange anything the day after Christmas, the lines for that are completely nuts I never understood why everyone needs to do that all on the same day???
