IT'S not solely a case of "you are what you eat", a visiting psychologist says, pointing to mounting evidence about the role played by a mother's diet during pregnancy.
UK-based Professor David Benton says food intake during the three months before birth had a major formative role in the brain functioning and memory capacity a child would carry through life.
It was the time of the brain's most rapid development, Prof Brenton said, adding the nutritionally critical time continued up to age two.
"Overall, there is increasing data that suggests diet can influence behaviour and cognitive development," Prof Benton said.
"The important thing is that we must have a balanced diet, and it must be applied from early in life."
Professor Benton said a higher body weight at birth, often a reflection of the mother's level of nutrition, had been linked to improved intelligence later in life.
Eating fish during pregnancy had also been linked to higher intelligence in children while, conversely, a shortage of iron or iodine could result in intellectual impairment.
The effects of a nutritionally balanced diet were also more immediate, Prof Benton said, pointing to five studies involving vitamin and mineral supplementation to inmates in prisons in the US, UK and the Netherlands.

Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
