    Help with wireless "piggybacking"

i want to let my neighbor use my internet signal with her laptop. i have wireless but don't know how to allow her access. she sees my thing but it says it's locked.

she doesn't download stuff or anything so it shouldn't cause me any issues.

Do you have it encrypted at all via WEP/WPA? If you don't know, I'd bet 20$ one of your kids would know.

No gym for home, work out floor with 30, but is it for 20 like 30 lb when you no lift it to be for men, for 30 lbs instead? or half is 10 for 20 pounds?

danzik17 is right, your network is probably encrypted. You have to off some security crap that your router has, in order for other people to use it.

Type your wireless routers ip into your browser address bar and you should be able to access it. If you didn't set it up then you can find the manual online and type in the default password. Usually it's 192.168.0.1 or similar. Admin or Administrator is usually the username..... If you can't remember your password you can always start over by resetting the router to it's defaults thats usually done by holding reset and plugging the unit in or holding reset for 10-15 seconds or something close to it.....then you can start over with a new password and a Shared Key Encryption where all she'd have to do when prompted is type in LittleWing instead of a long as Hex code like C6:B2:89:FG:3A etc......

What make and model is your router?

you're router isn't going to be encrypted unless you set it that way...it doesn't do it automatically.

In order to remove an encryption and set your router to "open source" you need the administrative login/password info....Did you set up your wireless yourself? If not, just ask person who set it up to make it open source...but remember, when you make your router open, its WIDE open.

You are better off giving you friend the encrypted password.

I wouldn't lose the encryption. Just give your neighbor the network key if you can have someone help you do that. If its completely open anyone on the street with a laptop could connect. I don't even broadcast mine (can't see my network), too many ignorant college kids around and it only takes like 1-2 minutes to add someone to my network.

Here's the manual. The instructions for the wireless portion start on page 52.

I suggest you turn off encryption and turn on MAC address limiting. A "MAC Address" is the unique ID assigned to all network (wired or wireless) devices. I prefer to do this because encryption has overhead and is harder for most people to deal with.

You can get you MAC by going to Start -> Run -> Type "CMD" -> Type "ipconfig /all". Look for the wireless connection. In that section you'll see an entry for "physical address", that's the MAC.

Page 57, "13.4.3 Wireless Media Access Controller (MAC) Filter Table", has the instructions for how to do this. You simply turn it on and enter the MACs that you need to.

When connecting to a router that uses MAC address limiting, and not encryption, you'll likely get a warning about that. Just click "yes" to connect anyway.

Yea but MAC filtering is damned easy to break whereas WPA is currently near impossible. I don't know about you, but I would never ever do anything related to financial stuff on an unencrypted wifi network.

I have mine locked down tight and I still use intrusion detection.....

This is awesome I caught my neighbor trying to tap into my network......I know it's my neighbor because I've scanned all of their networks and got their IP's and they are stupid enough to use their Last name to Identify their Network and their computer....

If you're doing Internet banking, you should be using SSL, anyway.

That is true, but you don't need to break into the bank's website. How many people do you know use the same password for everything? I can grab an amazing amount of passwords in plaintext from other websites and services and give those a try. There are a ton of things you can do.

Will these ever happen to you? Maybe not, but I think it's worth typing in a simple encryption key to make it much harder to do in any case.

I'd be more worried about someone hogging my bandwidth with tons of torrents or dl'ing kiddie porn via my IP....

The odds of someone sniffing traffic (after spoofing a MAC address) in a residential area are so low, you should be more worried about a good ol' fashioned burglary...at least twice.

I agree, but the more I know about how to do everything the more paranoid I become because I know how damn easy it is to do

I have teenage nerd boys on both sides of me. One is a Japanese Gamer Geek, I see him outside with his laptop all the time, every now and then he has this friend come over who looks like an asian version of Morris from that movie Cloak and Dagger...

I've seen inside of this guys van, He has 2 monitors, a couple antennas poking through the roof, he has a projector unit that they shine on the side of their house and play games at night. Anyway I don't trust them, they get bored playing games and decide to scan all of the wireless networks in the area. Not to mention when the power goes out my solar powered battery backed up home still has Wi-Fi access, them being on my network would mean uninterrupted gaming.....I wouldn't mind sharing if they were just browsing but I imagine they hog a lot of bandwidth.

The other kid may not be as geeky but all it takes is a little desperation during a blackout to inspire him to tap my Wi-Fi...

Now see, I always wanted to try that, but I never could find an application that would load balance across multiple Wireless NICs. I have a Dell PC just sitting in my closet that I could fit 3 PCI wireless NIC cards in.

What application do you use to multiplex those interfaces?

Try loading up pfSense on a spare computer. It's a FreeBSD based firewall/routing platform.

I don't load balance on my PC (although I think I could), I let my router handle all of that. I've never tried it but theoretically if you set 4 separate default routes in windows with equal metrics then they should do round-robin load balancing for connections, but again I've never tried that.
