This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/pro...seBVCookie=Yes

I bought an audible account and download books to listen to while im in traffic or while I work. I just finished this one last week, and it was awesome. This guy has done a ton of research into the origins of music and why we as humans love to both enjoy music and make it. It is highly technical, but easy to understand.

The conclusions blew me away and changed how I understand music.

Anything by Jack Kerouac or Tom Robbins....

I switch between nooks. I can never finish an entire book before checking out another. Currently I am working on these three.

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

Quote:
In his landmark best seller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant, in the blink of an eye, that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work, in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others?

In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of "blink": the election of Warren Harding; "New Coke"; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police. Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing", filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables.

Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience and psychology and displaying all of the brilliance that made The Tipping Point a classic, Blink changes the way you understand every decision you make. Never again will you think about thinking the same way.

The Creating Brain: The Neuroscience of Genius

Quote:
In a fascinating tour of creativity and the brain, Nancy Andreasen, professor of psychiatry at the University of Iowa and the winner of the National Medal of Science, explores how the human brain achieves creative breakthroughs--in art, literature, music, and science--the role of genes and environment, extraordinary creativity vs. ordinary creativity, and the question of genius and insanity.

She examines what extraordinary creators have said about creating and how their insights reflect particular qualities of creative people, and she includes her fascinating interview with the playwright Neil Simon, in which he described how his mind and brain work. This book offers insight into what creates the creative brain as well as advice to nurture creativity in both children and adults.

The Neuroscience of Dance: Scientific American

Quote:
Recent brain-imaging studies reveal some of the complex neural choreography behind our ability to dance. This article was published in the July 2008 edition of Scientific American.
http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/pro...seBVCookie=Yes

The above link is an artivle in Scientific American. It is short, but very interesting. I wish somebody would do research and pump out an entire book on the subject.

Jack= Desolation Angels, Dharma Bums, On the Road (of course), Book Of Dreams, Subterraneans, Big Sur,plus more......

Tom Robbins: I started with 'Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas' in High School for a book Report I thought it sounded like the goofiest name for a book and figured the story had to be as strange and indeed it was but magically Tom mastery of metaphor snagged me by the haunches of my mind and I've been hooked since.......'Even Cowgirls Get the Blues' is a great book it was even made into a movie by the dude who did Private Idaho and Good Will Hunting....

Skinny Legs and All is the only Robbins book I couldn't get into but it still had his brilliant mark on it.....

You can learn and retain technical stuff from audio alone? Nice - I can't do that. I'm always sitting at the comp studying with a couple VMs open with Server 2K3 to mess around with stuff they're talking about.

Just some recent stuff i've read off the top of my head that i enjoyed

Turkish Gambit by Boris Akunin. Think Sherlock Holmes (i'm also working on the complete works of SH), but Russian and set during the Ottoman Empire era.

The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge MD. Its a mix of case studies and past, current and future research into how the brain can change throughout life. He gives remarkable accounts of how stroke patients returned to full functionality, learning disabled kids excelled in whatever fields they were troubled with etc. Very well researched and entertaining if you are into that kind of stuff of course.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Think 1984 but way further into the future and more sci-fi'ish. Very interesting story, and has many religious, political and philosophical themes.

I'm currently reading Hippocrates' Shadow by David Newman MD. Sort of an expose of the modern medicine, doesn't get very technical but is well researched and is in line with reality.

Coming up soon (once i pass my boards) i'm gonna tackle The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky and some text books that have been gathering dust that i'm dying to finish but am scared i'll start forgetting all the nursing BS i've learned, lol.

KelJu you should check out Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks. He's a neurologist with many books out but his newest book is all about music, how it effects us on a neuro level etc etc. He also has another book out that is great called Anthropologist on Mars, its all about how disease creates a sort of different outlook on the world. Very cool stuff and heavily grounded in research.

Oh no! I wish I were that smart. I use audio books as a supplement to my normal training which involves reading technical books, reading through documentation, and ticking with lab scenarios.

Guys, omfg! Check this site out. It is a database of scientific and medical research.

Audio-Digest Foundation - Audio CME

I already bought some audio CDs of some of the research topics. It rocks so hard. I am not a medical professional or scientist, but I have been able to absorb a pretty descent amount of information from these.

I'm currently reading Smart Thinking: Skills for critical understanding and writing.

It's a very good book with many exercises.

I've also just purchased The Four Agreements. I've yet to read it, but I was given a cheat sheet of sorts. I applied what I'd garnered from just that paper with great results. After I finish the previous book, I'll move on to this one.

I used to think the same thing and then it hit me: you can't tell someone how to thin slice.

You simply need to keep upping your knowledge (especially beyond the level that most people are spoon-fed from the media), trust your instincts, and take action.

It's takes a bit of audacity, but it works.

Take the fireman example. The fireman had simply learned the rules of firefighting, and then thin-sliced his way to a decision. Not an answer, but a decision. Thin-slicing isn't about knowing any particular fact, but knowing enough about something to reach the correct decision. The firefighting didn't really know what the problem was and didn't try to talk out what he was thinking. He simply pulled his men out. Thus saving all of their lives by taking the correct decision.
