President Obama vows nation's economy 'will recover' during first speech before Congress

President Barack Obama will tell lawmakers and the public tonight that the U.S. will meet the challenge of the economic crisis, recover and “emerge stronger than before.”
“Though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover,” Obama will say in his first address to a joint session of Congress, according to excerpts released by the White House. “The weight of this crisis will not determine the destiny of this nation.”
Obama is seeking to convince lawmakers and voters that his plans to revive growth will succeed while cautioning that the recovery will take time. The president has spent his first month in office focused on three initiatives — a $787 billion stimulus bill, a bank-rescue plan and an effort to limit home foreclosures — while warning of economic “catastrophe” if the government doesn’t take aggressive action.
His address to Congress and the nation comes as reports showed consumer confidence collapsed this month and home values plunged in December. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke told the Senate Banking Committee earlier today that the U.S. economy is in a “severe” contraction and the recession may last into 2010 unless the financial system is stabilized.

I just don't see the stimulus package being the great tool he expects it to be.

    Agreed.

We'll have to sit back and see what happens.

Can't believe how many of the top teams are losing this late in the season.

Yeah, the way she kept staring at the camera was annoying.

Obama is a very impressive speaker, I am just glad we have a president who represents all Americans, and is providing proper leadership.

It's a little early to make that assumption about "proper leadership".

His poll numbers are dropping pretty quickly thus far... meaning many Americans feel he's not representing them. He's on a spending spree & I guarantee you most of his budget cuts will be on defense... seems like a typical liberal to me.

The media would have you believe different. Too many people just don't look behind the man to see his policies. They are too enamored with him. It's unfortunate. Blows my mind that people really think Obama can come along & solve all of our problems, but they do.

He can talk about bi-partisanship all he wants, but tell Republicans behind closed doors.. "I won".

I hope he does well, but I want this drooling over him nonsense to stop.. it's ridiculous. He's not doing anything different, he just looks better while he's doing it.

Pretty funny to me... MSNBC's, CNN's, etc. ratings plummeted after the election. I equate it to liberal talk radio & the fact that it always fails. I believe most liberal voters are clueless... they don't have a clue wants going on, just what Keith Olberman tells them. Election is over.. time to stick their heads back in the sand.

Fox News & conservative talk radio are huge successes because conservatives pay attention & actually know what's going on.

    ..my thought anway.

Not really! He's accomplshed more in 30 days than his predecessor did in 8 years. His disapproval rating is ironically the same number as Bush's approval rating.

How is this ironic? Bush had an 90% approval rating after 9/11. Obama has been in office for a month.

All I'm saying is that Obama is an unknown. His numbers can drop just as fast as they rose because of this. People voted for an idea, not a man. If the stimulus fails or terrorism picks up.. he's done in four years. The idea will fade & we will be left with a man who's policies failed.

Again, this isn't my hope... I just want the Obama-illusion to end. You are praising him as accomplished, when nothing has even been done. He passed an spending bill in a Congress owned by Democrats... that's no accomplishment.

I get ya, and agree he still has a huge moutain to scale. But those numbers after 9/11, were when most of the country was scared shitless, and resigned to being sheep!

Certainly yet to be determined. There can be many problems with the increased debt and value of the US Dollar from the stimulus package.

This is very true, he says with crossed fingers.

I know I am. Simply denying that we were in a recession and with all the other ills this Country has had to endure, isn't in my opinion a leader.

Why are you being so hard on him?
Give him a chance at least, shit.
I mean he has done a lot, and it appears that he's trying and doing his best to get as much done as possible to help this country.

Being critical of decisions, in no way means you are not supportive of the president.

Could you tell me where I have been hard on him? All I've attacked is the unrealistic image of him.

I think the stimulus plan was a joke.

The State of the Union Address

    Means nothing.

It's all propaganda. It's been this way for many decades.

The State of the Union speech is carefully crafted, written, and re-written, and practiced.

It does not mean a thing.

    Policy does.

For this, we'll have to wait and see.

Absolutely agree. This was all a show IMO. I think his agenda is to continue the liberal policies as GW did with the conservatives. I think this stimulous crap will only lead us further into the dark abyss and deeper in the spending hole. Where do you think all the money will come from to fund all his ideas and programs. Taxes. And he said he would not raise taxes on people under 250K. Remember what the first Bush said......"Read my lips, no new taxes." We know how that ened. We will never get out.
