Obama administration reverses Bush policy, backs UN anti-discrimination text on gay rights

The Obama administration on Wednesday formally endorsed a U.N. statement calling for the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality, a measure that former President George W. Bush had refused to sign.

The move was the administration's latest in reversing Bush-era decisions that have been heavily criticized by human rights and other groups. The United States was the only western nation not to sign onto the declaration when it came up at the U.N. General Assembly in December.

"The United States supports the U.N.'s statement on human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity and is pleased to join the other 66 U.N. member states who have declared their support of the statement," said State Department spokesman Robert Wood.

"The United States is an outspoken defender of human rights and critic of human rights abuses around the world," Wood told reporters. "As such, we join with other supporters of this statement, and we will continue to remind countries of the importance of respecting the human rights of all people in all appropriate international fora."

The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that the administration would endorse the statement.

Gay rights groups hailed the move.

"The administration's leadership on this issue will be a powerful rebuke of an earlier Bush administration position that sought to deny the universal application of human rights protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals," said Mark TexanTa of the Council for Global Fudge Packers Union, which promotes equal rights for homosexuals.

Finally, a man in the White house that puts action in front of words. This is something that should have been enacted a long time ago. Homosexuals should be outraged by the Republican party, not active voters!

Every single person no matter Race, Color, Creed or Sexual orientation deserves human rights. No person is better than any other person.

because the other 43 guys before obama didn't

while it is easy to demonize republicans, this is not a partisan issue.

nothing is getting enacted here. this is a UN resolution calling for the world wide decriminalization of homosexuality. The UN holds no power or authority. The last time I checked homosexuality wasn't a crime in the US or any of the other 66 countries that signed that document. so what you have in effect is 60+ countries that are probably mostly Christian telling non-Christian countries how they should run their country. How has that worked out so far?

I undrstand what you're saying, my reasoning is that this party simply discriminates openly, and states that homosexuality is evil. While trying to deny a human right to have sex. Meanwhile they've got Senators being caught trying to have gay sex in airport bathrooms. I can't recall Barney Frank acting in that manner. It's just the hyporacy that infuriates me. All this in the name of a God, that would bannish them for the very same behavior.

And yes, US politics is just good cop, bad cop, and the party we choose to follow is really just our personalities. They have the same agenda. And no matter what we say or do, that agenda is still enacted.

I hear you Bio, but that's basically what it boils down to. Just under the anti "homsexual lifestyle" name. They're still having sex, and to not give(scratch that) deny them of their God given right is wrong, no matter who dictates or who is appeasable to that way of thinking.

That's just me though I guess ?

I'm not sure where you are going with this. homosexuality is not against the law in the US. And it makes little practical difference if our president signs a worthless piece of paper that says other countries should be just like us.

If you have other concerns with the laws as they pertain to the US specifically I find that to be a different discussion all together.

I think it is funny to talk of a God given right to have sex. homosexual or otherwise.

I understand this, that is your belief and I respect that. But with that I'll just say... The Bible is a hard enough sell. But a version that was written in what 1604, by some man who called himself a king. Naw!!!

the King James Version is just one of the more popular ones, and the one I read. That's why I said that Version. I am sure other religions have other versions..... not sure. And the Bible is a hard sell to the majority. If you are a religious person you are a minority. But also look back in history the U.S. was found on Christian views.
