I don't know about the best, but I've heard that the synthetic oil is good for older, higher mileage engines.

I'd go semi or full synthetic. Weight depends on climate and engine compression, or things like leaky valvestem seals.

5w-30 for an engine in good shape is fine, 10w-30 for warmer weather - etc. Either one of those should fit most situations.

i'm just gonna buy the most expensive oil I can find. I'm a balla.

Full synthetic is the route i'm going. Hopefully it will undo the damage i've incurred from not changing my oil for 18k miles. i'm a lazy bastard sometimes.

It's only used 1/4 of a quart but it's worn thin. I've been meaning to change it since Jan. I'm an embarrassment to the board.

where you live 75% of the time your oil will only be at the 30 weight viscosity due to your climate , buy a 10w-30 with a detergent in it , do not add any extra gasoline additives to your car , they will reck your cat

It really depends on the current condition of the engine. With 100+K on it you more than likely have gunk built up in the returns and passages. Synthetic will loosen this up and like arteries you could cause blockage somewhere down the line. Also, if your burning oil now synthetic will likely increase the rate you burn through oil.

I would stick with a good dino oil if the engine is running well now.

Synthetic is great for low mileage engines that don't have a lot of wear on them. It definitely helps reduce wear over time. Once worn it's not suggested.

If you decide to run it anyway just keep an eye on oil consumption and also change the oil and filter after 1-2K miles to remove any freed up particles.
