WASHINGTON - Pakistan's president said yesterday Osama Bin Laden "may be dead" - but U.S. officials say it's wishful thinking.
"He may be dead. But that's been said before," Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari told reporters in Islamabad. "It's still between fiction and fact."
Zardari offered no proof of the assessment by Pakistan's intelligence service.
A U.S. counterterror official said the Al Qaeda kingpin's last authenticated audio message came March 19, and that "we continue to assume he is still alive and breathing."
"We don't know" if Bin Laden is pushing daisies, said State Department spokesman Robert Wood, but U.S. forces "continue to hunt" the fugitive Saudi.
"We have a dozen years of Al Qaeda telling us when their guys are killed or have died, so I really believe they'll announce it when Bin Laden goes," said Michael Scheuer, who once led the CIA's efforts to kill him.
Scheuer said Pakistan may be trying to persuade the U.S. to stop drone strikes.
Zardari's remark came as Pakistan attacked militants in Dir Valley, a region bordering Afghanistan that his government has ceded to extremists imposing Sharia, or religious, law.
Dir is just south of Chitral, a mountainous district where the U.S. has looked for Bin Laden since 2006, the Daily News reported exclusively last month.
"Bin Laden is likely to be in an area where there are a lot of sympathizers," said Robert Grenier, an ex-CIA Pakistan station chief now with the security firm Kroll. "The Swat Valley certainly fits that criteria."
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in Afghanistan yesterday, called the border frontier a "crucible of terrorism."
