    Swine Flu in AL

Since i'm in the know and you don't know. Two possible cases of swine flu have been reported in madison alabama. Fox news hasn't even caught on to this story yet.

Wonder how I could catch it ? I need some attention.

I'm no doctor, but I think this is out of hand. I heard that over 100 people die every day in the US from the regular flu... Over 35,000/year. In the world the number is over 500,000/year.

This swine flu "outbreak" seems like an overreaction.

Better to overreact and work on preventive measures than wait and see if this is worse than regular flu and then try to treat all the people who are infected at that point. Thats a sure fire way to overwhelm the medical services.

The point is that nobody knows just how bad this is. It could be on par, less virulent, or more virulent than regular flu. Either way, we have no immunity to it and therefore it has the potential to be disastrous.

    Better safe than sorry.

We've already had one of our large customers reschedule all face-to-face meetings to teleconferencing and another customer no longer allows on-site visitors (except for deliveries perhaps?).

Didn't the deaths so far involve just infants?

Regular flu kills thousands of infants and elderly every year, I'm sure it gets a few seemingly healthy adults but they probably are suffering from lowered immune system from any number of things like insomnia, alcoholism, drug abuse, weakened liver and kidneys, diabetic......hell I used to get sick easily back when I was obsessive about working out, all the over-training was really hurting me.....

I heard one of the deaths was actually after the person got viral pneumonia, the swine flu had set them up to get sick and die from that.......

Its blown a bit out of proportion IMO. The clinical course of this thing seems to be no different than any other type of flu, a fever, cough, aches, pains etc. If you are young and healthy its like catching any other type of flu during flu season. Stay home, take some Tylenol, drink fluids and rest. It caught us by surprise and there was no vaccination of the immunocompromised (like old/ very young/sick etc) but for the majority of fully grown healthy people its been blown way out of proportion. I don't know the figures but I read some doctor's blog a day or two ago that said only like 20 of the cases in Mexico were deaths due to swine flu by confirmed laboratory results. Mexico isn't exactly rich country that has tons of resources to spare to test every single person, if someone out there died with a flu like symptoms they just attributed it to swine flu.

So the take home lesson, wash your hands, cover you cough (use the crook of your arm, not your hand because you then go and touch twenty things after the sneeze/cough and it was all a pointless endeavor), takes your multi, keep yourself nourished well, get enough rest, stay away from anyone visibly sick and if you get sick, don't rush to the emergency room for a temp of 100 degrees F cause you'll just make them quarantine the whole thing and fuck shit up for everyone.

This is not an end of the world virus, like say the Avian Flu might be. Those types of viruses tend to kill the young healthy folk. One of the mechanisms they believe causes this is an immune mediated pneumonia. So the virus attacks your lungs, your immune system fights back leading to inflammation of the lungs leading to pneumonia and other complications. So the stronger your immune system the worse your pneumonia the greater likelihood of death.

The swine flu doesn't seem to be anything like this.

I think the reason Mexican are taking such drastic precautions is because they live with their extended family, they have their older relatives, plus younger nieces/nephews in the same house. They don't wanna be the one who comes home and kills Mama or Papa or Abuelo or Abuela
