Obama calls for understanding in Notre Dame speech

Obama calls for understanding in Notre Dame speech
By JULIE PACE, Associated Press Writer – 4 mins ago
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – President Barack Obama strode head-on Sunday into the stormy abortion debate and told graduates at America's leading Roman Catholic university that both sides must stop demonizing one another.
Obama acknowledged that "no matter how much we want to fudge it ... the fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable." But he still implored the University of Notre Dame's graduating class and all in the U.S. to stop "reducing those with differing views to caricature. Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words. It's a way of life that always has been the Notre Dame tradition."
One of the noisiest controversies of his young presidency flared after Obama, who supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare, was invited to speak at the school and receive an honorary degree. "I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away," the president said.
Just before Obama arrived in South Bend, at least five people were led away in handcuffs from protests outside the university. They included Norma McCorvey, the plaintiff identified as "Roe" in the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. She now opposes abortion and joined more than 300 anti-abortion demonstrators at the school's front gate.
More than half held signs, some declaring "Shame on Notre Dame" and "Stop Abortion Now" to express their anger over Notre Dame's invitation to Obama............more

The Catholic church has some work to do in America. When a majority of it's American members vote for a man with his past on abortion & it's universities are inviting him to speak & bestow an honorary diploma, something is really fucked up.

God, I remember that speech being aired yesturday to all airport patrons at my work. I was watching on wile I was eating my lunch and there were like 200 people around me. After 10 minutes of Obama's talking, about 150 left mumbling somthing along the lines of "Obama is talking nonsense."

Damn. That 150 must be Republican.
There are people who love me and there are people who hate me. I will take care of those people who love me and the rest can burn in hell.

Oh I see, The catholic church so believes in pro-life that they condone a phony war and allow our youth to be killed when they're much older than a fertalized egg.

catholic priests, it's also wrong to be pederasts, but, that's besides the point!

    What a bunch of crock.

You people amuse me. No matter what the issue is you're going to continue to bring up the sexual scandal. I make no excuses for it.. it was horrible. But what that has to do with a 3,000+ year old belief in the sanctity of life? Again, I'm not defending the scandal.. but is that really all you can use to dispute an argument over abortion?

Because they have Rep. politicians espousing their beliefs everyday trying to brainwash me into believing their beliefs.

This is just a wedge issue that is used to rile up the rabble, and I know this. They are guilty of supporting the fool GWB, and backed the worst foreign affairs blunder in history. Supported the killing of thousands of Americans, hundreds of thousands Iraqis and Afghanis. And they're trying to tell women they can't do whatever they wish with their own bodies.

No, they couldn't be in cahoots could they!

lol, is this a joke? Christians not wanting other non-christians to live by the rules of God? That sounds about right, I hear they like to keep it pretty exclusive.....

Of course they think everyone should live by God's rules, but they only have the authority (if I can call it that) to tell Catholics what to do.

It's ridiculous for IronAddict to complain he's being attacked/brainwashed when he's not even Catholic. That's like me complaining that Muslim's restriction on alcohol is hampering my weekend night life.

    Fair enough.

The only thing I would say is that the catholic church's stand on some issues (spread of aids in Africa being one that particularly gets to me) and the sex scandal stuff do leave them open for some attack.

I don't think Christianity is being pushed on anyone by Christians. They have a lot of swing in the GOP and want their voice heard just like everyone else, and it seems that they are pushing it, but they are no more pushing it than others are pushing against it.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.
