Poll: Favorable opinions of Cheney rise

Poll: Favorable opinions of Cheney rise - CNN.com

    Story Highlights
37% have favorable opinion of Dick Cheney, up 8 percentage points from January
55% of people in CNN poll hold unfavorable opinion of former vice president
Cheney speech Thursday expected to challenge Obama administration on Gitmo
    By Paul Steinhauser
    CNN Deputy Political Director
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- As Dick Cheney prepares to give a major speech on the battle against terrorism, a new national poll suggests that favorable opinions of the former vice president are on the rise.

But the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey, released Thursday morning, indicates that a majority of Americans still have an unfavorable opinion of Cheney.

Fifty-five percent of people questioned in the poll say they have an unfavorable opinion of the former vice president. Thirty-seven percent say they have a favorable opinion of Cheney, up 8 percentage points from January when he left office.

In the past two months, the former vice president has become a frequent critic of the new administration in numerous national media interviews.

"Is Cheney's uptick due to his visibility as one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama administration? Almost certainly not," says Keating Holland, CNN polling director.

"Former President George W. Bush's favorable rating rose 6 points in that same time period, and Bush has not given a single public speech since he left office."

The poll suggests that 41 percent of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the former president, with 57 percent viewing him unfavorably.

The survey's release comes just a few hours before Cheney speaks out Thursday on the war against terror during a speech at the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington-based think tank.

Sources tell CNN that the former vice president is expected to defend the Bush administration's handling of the war on terror and challenge the Obama administration's attempt to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. iReport.com: Sound off on Cheney, Obama speeches

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted May 14-17, with 1,010 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

My opinion of him has shifted positively. When he was bringing all of this Gitmo stuff out the members of the new GOP were thinking it was a bad thing, and it was, because they were the ones who should have been voicing this, not Dick Cheney.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Agreed. I wish he would have defended their administration while they were in office. The other side blasted them relentlessly & won hearts & minds. They didn't defend anything.

    I like Cheney, always have.

Cheney is a fucking warmonger. And, you had to hear what Jesse Ventura had to say about him. NOT favorable. I listen to Venture all the time; sumbitch is a bright guy.

I heard a Veteran on the news today say he thinks Iraq was still a good idea "cause they flew planes into those towers." When the interviewer corrected him and said the attackers were not from Iraq, he repeated himself.

Fuck the Bush administration for capitalizing on such a tragedy so they could invade Iraq.

And fuck Cheney, that asshole should be hung.

Agreed max. This is why ventura made a lot of sense to me. I read one of his books-yes I can read-and I cant wait till his next one. Its going to be his take on this whole 9/11 thing and how the government knew and certainly did nothing to curtail what was going on.
As for the vet, what a fucking twit.

    A poll number on Cheney?

He is not in office anymore.

It's his policies - of which there are hundreds that matter - not just gitmo and waterboarding.

This is very foolish to be in the media, now: Cheney polling numbers. He's gone.
It's an accurate statement that our current spending will not be increasing the debt We've stopped spending money that we don't have.

-- Jack Lew, then director of the Office of Management and Budget, in Feb. 16, 2011 testimony before the Senate Budget Committee.
