    Question for the ladies

Hi. I think this is the right forum to post this question in... I was just wondering if anyone has a contraceptive pill that they actually LIKE. I've always hated being on them-- it seems like they make you retain water. It also seems so counter productive to actually GIVE YOURSELF estrogen when you are trying to stay lean.
Thanks in advance for any input.

I like the Depo Shot. I don't seem to retain water, or get any weight fluctuations. I was on it last year and 9 months ago came off and didn't notice any changes in my body. I'm going to go back on it again seeing it didn't make a difference either way.

    Interesting question about the estrogen.

I haven't been on the pill in probably 8 yrs now and don't plan on ever taking it again. I firmly believe it screwed with my natural hormones which caused me to have deficiencies and miscarry twice. Just my opinion.

IMO I would consider the patch. Some people react dif. to certain Contraceptives. Many people gain loads of weight while others gain little or not at all. I called my doctor about this question and he said it will make you hold onto water.

Hey Jodi - when you got the depo shot. Did your periods become irregular for a while until your body adapted? Just curious. I have a friend that is considering having that done.

I like the patch because you can change it once a week. I'm forgetful when it comes to the pill and such.

I have a GREAT pill! It's called Yasmin and I don't hold water on it. I've taken a bunch - orthocept, desogen, some other one I hated and can't remember right now. If you stay with the pill this one really is better and different.

I copied this from their website:

BERLEX LABORATORIES ANNOUNCES FDA APPROVAL OF YASMIN®, NEW ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE WITH UNIQUE PROGESTIN
National Survey Demonstrates Need for New Birth Control Pill Options

Montville, NJ, May 14, 2001 -- Berlex Laboratories, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved YASMIN® (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). YASMIN is a new, low-dose, monophasic oral contraceptive and the first and only birth control pill to contain the unique progestin, drospirenone.

“YASMIN is the second major innovation that we’ve introduced to the U.S. market this year. Its market entry, along with the introduction of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system MIRENA early this year, represents further expansion of the Berlex leadership in contraception,” said Reinhard Franzen, Vice President and General Manager, Female Healthcare, Berlex Laboratories, Inc. “Because of the unique clinical pharmacology of YASMIN, we believe this product will provide women with an important new option in contraception.”

Drospirenone is different from the progestins currently available in other oral contraceptives. As an analogue of spironolactone, widely used by Ob/Gyns for many women, drospirenone exhibits antimineralocorticoid activity that influences the regulation of water and electrolyte balance in the body. This activity may increase potassium levels in some patients. Therefore, it is recommended that women with kidney, liver or adrenal disease should not take YASMIN, because this activity could cause serious heart and health problems. Patients taking drugs that could increase potassium should consult their health care professional before taking YASMIN.

The launch of YASMIN continues in the tradition of Berlex’s German parent company, which introduced oral contraceptives in the European market 40 years ago. Over 500,000 women in Europe are currently using YASMIN, where the product has been available in several countries, including Germany, since November of 2000.

    Survey Finds Women Are Dissatisfied

While more than 18 million women in this country use one of the more than 40 oral contraceptives available today, a new national survey of U.S. women aged 18-45 commissioned by the National Women’s Health Resource Center (NWHRC) shows that nearly half (47 percent) of women who have used birth control pills in the past five years were dissatisfied enough to discontinue use or switch brands.

"Nearly 700,000 unintended pregnancies occur each year in this country because women stop taking their birth control pills," said Amy R. Niles, Executive Director of the NWHRC. “The results of our survey show that women are dissatisfied with the choices currently available to them. That being the case, an oral contraceptive that makes birth control more acceptable for more women in this country is not only important, but necessary progress.”

Data Demonstrate Safety, Efficacy and Tolerability

Large-scale clinical trials involving 2,629 women with over 33,160 cycles established the contraceptive effectiveness, safety and menstrual cycle control of YASMIN. Trials found that YASMIN offers excellent cycle control with a low rate of spotting and breakthrough bleeding.

YASMIN proved more than 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, with only one pregnancy occurring in 3,201 cycles of 326 YASMIN users.

Women who participated in clinical studies tolerated YASMIN very well, with only six percent discontinuing use due to side effects.

Important Information about YASMIN and All Oral Contraceptives

Drugs that may increase serum potassium when used on a daily long-term basis to treat chronic conditions or diseases include ACE inhibitors, angiotensin-II receptor antagonists, potassium-sparing diuretics, heparin, aldosterone antagonists and NSAIDs (i.e., daily use for arthritis).

Oral contraceptives (OCs) are not appropriate for all patients, and serious as well as minor side effects have been reported with the use of all OCs. OCs do not protect against HIV infection (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases. Women who use oral contraceptives are strongly advised not to smoke.

    Information for Consumers

Women who would like to learn more about YASMIN should visit www.YASMIN.com or call the toll-free number 866-YASMIN1 (927-6461) to receive a complimentary, informational product brochure by mail.
    ************************************************** **

I've been really happy with it so if you decide to go with pill form you might want to discuss Yasmin with your doctor. Good luck!

See, I was told you either have your period the whole time, or you don't. There are people this has happened too.

Also, did she put on a lot of weight?

It stopped all together. Although, even after I stopped it, I haven't had it back since. Doctor says its due to my physically active lifestlye because Prolactin and such looks normal. Its great, I'm not on any birth control and i still don't get my periods.

I don't know that she put on weight because of it. I believe that in her particular case, it was more that she began eating junk food and not exercising regularly. Jodi may have better answers for you as she's a female and has used the shot.

Hey.....<light bulb lights up> You just triggered a question I've been meaning to ask. maybe I should put this in another thread. Dunno. Let me know what you think. It's more for female competitors to discuss.

But -- I was wondering. if this happened to you while you were dieting down? But...when I went from normal dieting...then to cutting diet....I didn't have a period until I started taking in more calories.

High cals or low cals, I still don't get it. According to my doctor is has to do with how physically active you are and your hormones get a bit crazy. I don't know the details but I'm sure I could dig some up sometime.

There is a thread here somewhere that deals with this. If I remeber correctly, it is bcause of low bodyfat in the body and the body not fuctioning correctly when real low in women.

See, I was looking more for the science of it happening and if there was a way to prevent the period from not accuring because, it is very unhealthy not to have a period.

The diets we all use for cutting is already unhealthy enough. But, for women, this just adds to the pot.

Does anything hormonally happen to men when you all cut?

when i've been at my leanest mine has stopped for a few months. but recently when i was far from being that lean i skipped again so i went to the doctor just to be sure all was well.

did some tests that said i was fine and she concluded it wasn't just a bodyfat thing but also physical activity like jodi said.

    hmmmmm

So then. to make sure women keep strong healthy bones and to keep having their periods...we should eat right and tune down the weight training........You'd think there would be another alternative. OTHER THAN THE BC Pill. Oh well.....Guess I'll just accept it and move on.

    Thanks you guys!

My doctor says I'm perfectly fine and to not worry about. She never once said it was unhealthy as a matter of fact she said I was lucky.

I feel lucky when I don't have periods. Mine are awful when I do have them. I have endometriosis. My periods are irregular but more so when I cut.

It's normal for me to skip a period each year... I have long cycles anyway. My doc said it was no biggie and enjoy the break.

Okay.....So I'm just freaking out then over nothing.....at least I feel better hearing from the ones it's actually happening to sometimes. My doctor is a male......so I'm sure he wouldn't know how lucky people are NOT to have a period.

Thanks again all. I really do appreciate all you had to say in reg. to my concern. You're all wonderful........*muah*
