April 2 (Bloomberg) -- One more minute may be the difference between an ``adequate'' lover and an unsatisfactorily short performer, according to a new survey in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The survey of sex therapists found that three to seven minutes was ``adequate'' time for sexual intercourse between a man and a woman, while two minutes or less was ``too short.'' Still, it's ``desirable'' to last seven to 13 minutes, although you're at risk of going ``too long'' somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes, the survey concluded.

The results suggest that most people have ``unrealistic'' expectations about sexual performance, study authors led by Eric Corty from Pennsylvania State University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, concluded.

``The results from the present study, by providing a realistic not a fantasy model of sexuality, are useful both in treating people with sexual concerns and dysfunctions, and, with wider circulation, in preventing the onset of sexual dysfunctions,'' the study said.

Researchers surveyed 50 members of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research in the U.S. and Canada, selected randomly from a group of 180 with at least three years of clinical experience. Just 34 returned their surveys, below ``the level at which one can be reasonably confident that a sample will be representative of a population,'' the authors noted.
