The gym I'm at now SUCKS, and sometimes I have a hard time getting motivated because the lack of things they have at my gym, it's mostly machines and tiny as hell. Switching as soon as I free up some time.

Do you think a gym can get you in the mood, or motivate you to go? Meaning if your gym sucks, or there isn't the normal things you'd use there do you think it can affect your training and or mood to want to go?

Absolutely! if planet fitness was the only gym around I would have a hard time getting into it. I have 2 memberships. One at a hole in the wall hardcore gym that I get so amped to work out in, and one that I go to because it is close to my house.

I had some of the best workouts of my life in shitty weight rooms in high school and college. Something about packing a bunch of testosterone riddled young men in a small room with no air conditioning that gets me going. No homo of course.

But the gym I'm at now is straight. It's a Club Fitness and it's got everything I could ask for except maybe a seated Military press and DB's above 100, but for 15 bucks a month I can't complain. Good handful of bodybuilders and powerlifters regularly come in around the time I workout too, one guy is going for his IFBB pro card this summer, so it's not bad at all, but I do miss Gold's.

to me there is nothing better than the environment in a good gym that drawls a hardcore crowd where there are some people in better shape which helps to train harder, etc. I've only been a member of 2 different gyms (Gold's and the old gym me and my buddy's owned in PA) in the past 16 years so it's hard for me to imagine a small gym with limited equipment.

you need to get the fuck out of there!

how far is the drive going to be to a more well equipped facility?

Its not my gyms job to motivate me. If i cant dig down deep enough to find it within myself, it never was there to begin with. I dont need some pencil neck behind the counter to motivate me, thats what the mirrors are for. Anytime im in the zone...Some one walks up to ask me questions. Im in the fucking zone, can you not see that? Gahhh.

It depends how bad a gym we're talking, I mean, it it's like a planet fitness where I can't make a sound or a gym with no free weights, then yes, completely drains the motivation. I think as long as people have a set of barbells, benches, squat rack, and good size dumbbells, a great workout can be achieved, no need for all the fancy nautilus machines and hammer strength stuff.

About 20 minutes more round trip, just because it's on the other side of the city I live in. But I think it'll be worth it. Having limited things to pick from (this gym is mostly machines) it blows and I hate being limited and not able to do what I want because of the lack of equipment.

My gym smells like piss and has no machines. No one is ever there and i get to choose the music. Machines are nice but i would take the fact that i have it all to myself usually as the biggest plus

I try to get going in the gym I'm at now and it just sucks because I'm like well I'd like to do decline bench press but can't cause they don't have the stuff for it, or corner presses cause there's no bars to use besides a small tiny one that wouldn't work.

And to add, I really don't like machines and doing bench press on a smith machine isn't really my thing. After this week I'll be going to a different gym, sucks it'll be further but a least I'll be able to do what I want and not be limited.

With all the sluts running around at mine, gets me going!

for sure... I love my gym and if i didn't i wouldnt go as much

I think Hammer Strength Machines are an invaluable tool for bodybuilders. Some of the nautilus machines are useful as well. I'm thinking of leg extensions, leg curls, hip adductions/abductions, fly/rear delt machine, certain preacher machines etc.

I wouldn't give those up to train exclusively with freeweights even if the gym was closer and cheaper. I switched from Gold's to Club Fitness because it is less than half the price and I'm not really giving anything up at this point. When I get to the point of needing heavier dumbells, I can always go back to Gold's. But like was already stated, I'm motivating myself on the drive to the gym..that comes from within, not without.

That reminds me though, I'm psyching myself up for a heavy set of squats yesterday. Standing in the rack with both hands on the bar, breathing in and out with my eyes closed and shit like that, and just as I'm about to jump under the bar and start rocking, this old fucker with gold teeth taps me on the shoulder and is like "ay bruh, can I work in witchu?" I was like wtf is the matter with you. Fuckin disrespectful ass people piss me off. I never encountered that bullshit at Gold's

Sounds great, except the piss smell.

The best gym ever was the one my buddy started about 10 years ago. It was a small basement hole. Even the lights were those clear incandescent type that hung from a cord down from the ceiling. It was cold in winter, hot in summer. But it had all you needed: Olympic bars, plates benches and a squat rack. Did some serious lifting there. Now he has moved up several times as is business grew. Surer there are more cardio-bunnies for eye candy, but it just does not feel the same to me.

I know what you mean. I trained my brain to associate dark dank smelly hot cement floors with pure bliss. That is the environment that I first lifted weights in, and that is when I first learned about my passion for the iron.

It is similar to why I love the smell of cowshit, because it makes me think about tripping on mushrooms back home. I had a lot of important memories made in a cow pasture.

the environment of gym is very important to me as well... maybe change this one...

Same here! I like dungeon style gyms. Unfortunately there isn't one where I live. It just gets me ready to crush shit!

While all that may be true, the environment you're in plays a big part in your mental state. Just look at your last statement about the person disturbing you while you're in the zone. It goes both ways; your environment can kill the mood or it can enhance it.

The only thing that gets Albob in the mood anymore is Viagra...

Ha! 'still got it...

Ditto. 2 Gyms. Always want a back up gym in case the first one breaks ;) My hardcore training gym is a warehouse. No HVAC. Turf and weights. And cables. Low gadgetry. It's home. <3

Sent from outer space.

Powerhouse in North East Philly is an old school gym, older than dirt, hot in the summer, freezing in the winter, & it is filthy, but some really cool dudes go there, its very cheap, but the owner's are always changing and trying to turn it into a yuppie joint... I also go to LA Fittness,, very nice , clean, fresh, 30$ per mo... many pretty chicks, swimming pool, sauna's, basketball court, handball courts, hot tubs...

I'm gonna open my own gym, all the lights will be tanning lights so you can get a good base while exercising and the water fountains will dispense creatine
