Brett Favre of Minnesota Vikings questions Brad Childress over attempt to pull him from game - ESPN

It was not the first time that Childress wanted to pull Favre from a game, but found the veteran quarterback not willing to step aside.

Sources tell ESPN that on Oct. 5, during a Monday night game against the Green Bay Packers that drew national attention for Favre's first game against his former team, Childress tried to pull Favre when he was unhappy about a decision the quarterback had made.

The Vikings had a 30-20 lead and were running their four-minute offense. The Packers were out of timeouts, and the Vikings called a run play on third and 10 with 3:27 left. Favre changed the play at the line of scrimmage and took a shot downfield that fell incomplete, stopping the clock.

Childress was furious and told offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell that he was taking Favre out of the game, sources told ESPN. Bevell talked Childress out of it, but news got back to Favre that Childress was going to pull him.

That week, sources said, Favre went into Childress' office and confronted him and Childress backtracked, saying that it was the emotion of the game and the coach didn't want to get too far away from what they were doing offensively.

On Nov. 15, Favre was taken out of a game against Detroit, with a little more than five minutes remaining and the Vikings up 27-10. Childress tried to smooth the situation over by joking about pulling Favre, but he was not amused, sources told ESPN.

But all is not well between Brad and Brett, and the primary difference centers on the quarterback's penchant to check out of runs and into passes. According to one team member, Favre has expressed frustration for much of the season about Childress' unwillingness to let him audible more.

The offense opened the second half with another three-and-out series, and Favre apparently pushed his coach over the edge on the next series. According to a member of the team, Favre checked out of a run and into a pass, then was sacked for a 5-yard loss by Panthers cornerback Dante Wesley.

The Vikings punted the ball away for the fifth time in the game on the next play.

Favre, who is easygoing off the field, draws plenty of laughs at his press conferences, and he has referred to Childress as "Chilli" in several instances. But Favre hasn't abided by one of Childress' credos: not to air in-house information publicly.

Favre has been forthcoming about his own injuries, as well as the ailments of other players this season, including starting offensive tackles Bryant McKinnie (ankle) and Phil Loadholt (shoulder).

Moral of the story: Favre sees himself as above Childress, the head coach, and doesn't listen to him on or off the field, oftentimes changing the play call at the line of scrimmage from a running play to a passing play.

His head has grown at a Barry Bonds esque rate over the years.

It's too bad, because like you said, at one point in time this guy was admirable.

Now, I just await his bloody death while rooting for him to take a pounding week after week. Last week in overtime, his head smashed against the frozen grass in Chicago. I couldn't have been happier that although dizzy and unable to open his eyes, he stayed in the game and managed to get sacked on the next two plays, basically costing the Vikings the game in the process.

this is complete bs, seriously. of course a hall of famer who came back to play doesnt want to be pulled from the game. this shit happens all of the time, but you hear about it because its brett favre. when steve young commented on it, he said he agreed totally with favre and had the same conversations in his career, as did joe montanna. oooh, a quarterback didnt want to be taken out of the game.... headline news!

More to it then that. Of course Hall of famers don't want to be pulled from a game. As a NY Jet, the others players hated him. Why? Because he barely talked to them, and would never hang out with them on the road. The QB is supposed to be the team leader, the field general, not the guy who isolates himself from the rest of the team, and then whines about coaching decisions. He is doing the same thing in Minnesota. Basically he considers himself above the team.... Football is a team sport and a TRUE Hall of Famer, would shut his mouth and play the game.

And don't get off on the Giants victory today, those guys had their bags packed for the off season

I agree. It's his competitive side showing. Even at 40 yrs old, he has the best year off his career and kicks ass. I think alot of people are jealous.
Green Bay hated they traded him both times they played as he kicked their ass. I would not be surprised to see them go to the super bowl if their defense can play well.

Didn't we later find out that it was Mangini that wasn't putting him on the injury report and that Favre was more than happy to sit after he injured his arm? Mangini even got fined for it as I recall.

I've only read that the Jets got fined for failure to report the injury, but the word I've heard (I'm a poet and I didn't even know it) is that it was Favre forcing Mangini's hand in order for him to play.

With Mangini's job on the line, I have a hard time imagining a scenario where he would continue to throw Favre out on the field on his own accord given just how putrid he was last season.

By week 12, the Jets had compiled an 8–3 record, including a win over the previously undefeated Tennessee Titans. However, the Jets lost four of the last five games of the season, including the final game against the Miami Dolphins, who had acquired Chad Pennington after he was released from the Jets to make room for Favre. In those five games, Favre threw eight interceptions and only two touchdown passes, bringing his season total to twenty-two of each.

While his off the field antics leave a lot to be desired, his on the field performance this year is to be admired. He did have a good team to work with, but you can't fault his play at QB.

I'm not faulting his play this season. He's been excellent for most of the season.

What I dislike is taking the ball out of Adrian Peterson' hands by audibling at the line, going against his coaches that scheme for their jobs for an entire week before the game.

He's without a doubt a douchebag off the field, but that doesn't mean his douchebaggery doesn't carry over to the games.

I don't get how Favre spit on all Packer fans. It's so obvious that it's the other way around. He wanted to come back and he could obviously still play at an elite level but the organization pushed him out.

What makes it even more obvious that Packer fans are just purely jealous is that they now have an amazing quarterback and still can't stop ripping on Favre. Packer fans in their 20s grew up watching this guy...loving this guy and now they can't stop talking smack about him. I lived in Milwaukee for 6 years and I remember seeing license plates playing on favre and the number 4 like 4eva or something similarly stupid.... that's how much you put him above the Packers organization and now people say he puts himself over the team. So now that he's gone and your organization pushed him out and you still have amazing potential in Rodgers, Packer fans still can't sit back and be happy that he's doing well.

I have not read this entire thread but before Favre went to the Jest's he was my 2nd favorite QB. He's an all American dude that you just can't hate. However, after I just said, he sold out and went to the Jest's and I've disliked him since (although his Sears commercials are comical).

Anyway, I'm glad he moved on. So to my point, I think he should go another year. He's always been a guy that throw INT's at the wrong time but....damn...his arm is solid! I'm not saying I want him to retire on SB win, because I'm always hoping the Pat's will win the SB, but if the Pat's are out of the race I wouldn't be opposed to him retiring on a SB win. Me thinks that's what he's shooting for, but Peterson needs to stop fumbling!

I agree with this. I drafted AP in my fantasy money league. I had a feeling that AP would not do as good this year because I expected Farve to throw the ball alot. I think they passed more than they should and it hurt their game. I always believe you establish your running game first, and then pass. They did it backward this year. But they were still able to almost make it to the superbowl.

The NFL as a whole is becoming a passing league now for some reason. I am drafting a qb first next year!

Sheer numbers are one thing, but I don't think Favre in his prime was anywhere near Marino and Montana, and Elway was more athletic, and learned from his mistakes better. Favre was fun to watch, and even had his moments last night, but in the end he seems prone to making the same mistakes over and over. He won his title, and I really don't see things getting better for him now.
