Jack Tatum, the fearsome defensive back who characterized physical Raiders defense during the team's golden era, died Tuesday morning after sustaining a heart attack. He was 61.
Drafted by the Raiders in 1971 out of Ohio State, Tatum played nine of his 10 NFL seasons with the Raiders and made Oakland his primary residence. The three-time Pro Bowl safety was a member of the 1976 Super Bowl championship team.
Best known for delivering a hit that paralyzed New England Patriots receiver Darryl Stingley, Tatum later developed his own physical challenges. Diagnosed with diabetes, Tatum in 2003 underwent surgeries to amputate all five toes on his left foot and much of his right leg.
Tatum is survived by his widow, Denise, and their three children.

May he rest in peace, he was a warrior on the field.
yes, a very very tough man. my only favorite football team from the late 60's and 70's. the raiders. what a team. had the highest winning percentage out of any pro franchise. higher than montreal canadiens, ny yankees, boston celtics..
and what a backfield in those days..
Jack Tatum, George Atkinson and "Dr Death" Skip Thomas and Willie Brown .
just wish the raiders were like the raiders from the 60' 70's.
