I do Jhoon Rhee Taw Kwon Do (not the traditional tae kwon do) I'm a 2nd black belt, yes we do spar.
Does anybody here take Tae kwon do? If you do what belt are you and do you spar?

thats cool, right now I have been doing it off and on for about 3 years all together. I just got back into it last february and am now a blue belt. I like to spar, it is great for cardio and speed..
I've been giving this some thought. I'd like to do it but I just have to find the time to fit it in. I'm working on some ways to be able to work it in. I've seen some classes and it looks like it would be a lot of fun. I know it'll be hard work also.
It is alot of fun and great for mind and body concentration. If you practice the forms and moves enough it all becomes natural after a while so that if someone came up to you on the street and put you in a hold it would just come natural without even thinking about it, and you could put them into submission instead of you. Look into it.

I have heard two things about Tae Kwon Do. Hard on the joints, and that its worthless.
Every MMA competitor I have ever talked to said that the Tae Kwon Do people get thier ass handed to them. The only person I knew who took it and took other things as well, said it was somewhat worthless.
Maybe it has to do with poor instruction, I really can't say. But if you ask around on every board your on, you are bound to get the above response over and over again from what I've seen.

I've been practising TKD for 6 years, aikodo for 4, and they both suck when it comes to real fighting ...
I've recently (two years now) switched to shootfighting, and find it much more rewarding ..
If you like the strides and filosofical part .. by all means, go ahead ..
If you would like to learn how to fight .. fight ...

the Tough get Duct-tape!"

That sucks, because I was looking at Aikido myself as something suggested for larger folk.

Mudge ... take it for what it's worth - exercise and knowledge. Like Bruce Lee and many others after him, they take what seems useful and uses it, the rest is discarded. TKD could be seen as a way to under leg attacks. Akido could be used to understand how to use one's energy against an opponent. Boxing could be used to understand hand strikes ... etc. There is no one perfect MA.

I can agree with that.
