Why is MLB so full of problems? I really can't see how corking a bat adds anything. But who am I.......(don't answer that)

Story here.
Personally, I think everyone is overreacting. Sammy did break the rules and needs to face punishment, but a corked bat supposedly only adds a few feet to your home runs (and even that is still up for debate). Cork does not improve your hand-eye coordination. The idea that Sammy's "legacy" is tarnished is a joke.

Sammy Sosa is certainly not the first player to get caught with a corked bat. Albert Belle got caught, then went on to hit something like 50-55 home runs the next year. Cork adds very little, if anything. Still, it is against the rules.
Well, I'm with you IAB, I think they are making too much of it.

Good on him! I am far from being a Sosa fan (think he is an arrogant cocky prick) He deserves all the negative publicity he gets from this. Althought you may think it only adds a few feet to a homerun. It is all those undeserved basehits with that extra pop that squeeked through the infield. Just my $.02

Good point. All you hear about though is the home runs.Originally posted by IainDaniel

A little scuff on the baseball gives the ball "only a little" added movement. A extra inch curvature on a hockey stick give the player "only a little" extra control. Vaseline smeared on a football player's jersey makes it "only a little" harder to grab it.
See a trend here? There's a reason for rules - so that everyone is competing under equal conditions. He broke the rule. He should live with the consequences.
While I agree with your statement, corking a bat provides far less of an advantage than any of your examples.Originally posted by CaptainDeadlift

He will be suspended for probably 10 games and that should be it.

Can't Agree more! Down with Sammy!![]()
Measuring the impact of the cork and comparing it with the other impacts is near impossible. We could probably debate it and never come to any conclusion.Originally posted by Pepper

Let's say the ball comes off an uncorked bat at 125 mph and the cork makes a 5 mph difference. It might be just enough to cause the ball to tip off the top of a fielder's glove instead of the fielder making a diving catch.
As for the suspension, that seems about right.
After reading that article, there doesn't seem to be a clear distinction on the penalties for using a corked bat.

A lot of penalties in MLB as determined on a case-by-case basis.Originally posted by Pianomahnn

IMO, I think MLB is starting to crack down on their drug policy! Not saying who is doing what here, but I guarantee it is rampant! I think the players are trying to figure out what to do now to still stay on the top of their games and be a top notch player!
