The Red Sox and A-Rod

Here is what I have heard lately:

Both teams are willing to make the Manny for A-Rod swap, but A-Rod's contract is the major hurdle. Texas wants Boston to take A-Rod's entire contract AND pay $5 million per year of Manny's contract. Boston is not willing to pay Manny to play elsewhere.

Now, from I have heard, A-Rod wants out of Texas so badly, he is willing to rework his contract and defer part of his salary to fit the Red Sox budget, and that may include voiding the last three years of his contract so Boston could use that $75 million elsewhere (A-Rod has a clause in his contract that allows him to void the last three years). A-Rod's wife is from New England and she would love to return to the area.

Then there is Nomar. Boston can not afford both Nomar and A-Rod, but the only way to dump Manny is to trade him for A-Rod, and that means the Sox would have to deal Nomar (his contract expires after the '04 season). Rumor has it the Sox have talked to Anaheim about Jarrod Washburn, Troy Glaus, and Garret Anderson, but no firm deal has been mentioned. They have also talked to St Louis about Adam Kennedy and/or JD Drew. The Red Sox want a deal lined up and in place for Nomar if the A-Rod trade happens.

Word is, Texas wants this thing wrapped up by the end of this week so they know where they stand when the winter meetings start next week. Stay tuned Sox fans....this could be a very interesting week. I don't want to see Nomar go. I am hoping A-Rod comes here and defers his salary so we can afford to keep Nomar too. Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

Peter Gammons thinks a deal WILL happen, and the dude is NEVER wrong.

Anyone else hear anything different???

Are the Rangers smoking crack???? They will get tagged with that horrible contract AND have to pay Manny...no way I'd do that.

He is never wrong about the BoSox. He don't cover the other teams as closely. He loves his Red Sox.

Yes, they are on crack. The Sox want to get RID of Manny, and that does not mean paying him after he leaves.

True, although he follows the Yankees as closely as he follows the Red Sox.
