Yeah his retirement was a surprise to me. That's what happens when you pay someone too much money to play. He definitely had the talent to be one of the greatest running backs ever. He probably decided it was more fun to party and smoke pot, and stay healthy, then to play running back. Lord knows he can afford it.

    Hey Folks!

This is HIS life. It's HIS decision. It takes more balls and forethought to walk away if it makes YOU happy, than it does to keep playing because *everyone else* expects and want you to--for their own selfish reasons.

    I respect his individuality.

I assume he has done well enough (financially) with his earned income over the past 5 years, and he also qualifies for the NFL pension when he hits retirement age.

He is heading to Asia to travel for "several months." When he gets to Saigon, if he does, I'll hopefully have chat with him.

He's doing what we all should do--look out for number 1--because no one else will.

    Oh Please....

So any decsion is beyond criticism provided it is "your" decision? Of course it is his life and his decision and it is my decision to call that decision ridiculous and a WASTE OF TALENT.

Waste of talent yes. His choice yes. .... As a human being he is free to decide what he wants and if he decides he doesnt wanna be hit any more.. I dont blame him.

What a wake up call for me this morning. This sucks for me being a HUGE Dolphins fan. I was looking forward to this season too. I'm hoping he second guesses himself and comes back after training camp. I was listening to ESPN radio while I was working out and Chris Mortenson thinks he'll do that.

Gulp.... neither P. Growing up in the Washington, DC area, well let's just say when I heard Joe Gibbs was returning to the Redskins, that was like the best news I'd heard in a long, long, long time.

While in Ohio, since I was in the southwest corner... sit down Pat... I pulled for the Bengals . It was my duty to hate the Browns, although I'll say when Modell moved them to Baltimore in the middle of the night I thought that sucked big time. If any city deserves a NFL football team, its Cleveland. Here in southern Jersey, I'm forced to watch the Eagles.

I must say though, I've watched pro football for many years, and have become somewhat disillusioned with the game as we now know it. I enjoy watching Ohio State football so much more.

I was shocked, but I think he wasn't ready for life in the NFL. I'm looking at it more like a case of 'This is what I want" and when you get there, you didn't really want it at all.

Me, I wish him the best.

FUCK Ricky Williams. Sure it's his choice to retire, but he totally screwed his team with his timing. He could have retired when the season ended, or played out the 2004 season then retire. Retiring ONE WEEK before camps open really puts the Dolphins in a bad poistion. They now have to rely on someone who had 41 total carries last year to carry the load. Shit, even if he retired a week ago, the Dolphins could have gone after Eddie George. I'm not a Dolphins fan and really don't care if they suck now, but Ricky Williams just screwed over all his former teammates and they won't forget that.

I see his side, I see fan's side. I read somewhere that he got caught doing the chronic and that played into his decision but wasn't the only reason. I don't even smoke, but if my boss said he was going to randomly drug test me to make sure I wasn't smoking pot, I would quit. I hate having retrictions on me, even if they are things I already don't do. Maybe RW wants a little freedom.

Jeez...some of you make him sound like a freedom fighter

    Here's the scoope...
He gets paid, what $5 million a year to play a game. Yes his "job" is hard, but he should consider himself lucky to have it. He has 50+ players counting on him..you know...his TEAM....and he ups and walks.

Drugs? Well, if I am stroking $5 million a year to guy, I damn well have the right to make sure he is not snorting it up his nose.

RW is a quitter. He has every right to be a quitter if he wants to, but let's not sugar coat and and call it a search for freedom. I'd be alot more free if I fired my employees, shut down and took off. I'd have every right, but I'd be an asshole.

Not if it doesn't effect his on-field performance, IMO.

Well, we don't test here, but if we found out an employee was doing that, they'd be gone. Period. And we don't pay anyone $5 million :-)

But how do you know whether it is or isn't effecting his performance? It's better to just go ahead and test to make sure they're clean and performing at their peak.

While I agree that the timing is somewhat bad and if I were a teammate of his I would be angry, I think that no one is lookin at the fact that he gave up millions and millions of dollars to have peace of mind and do what HE thought was right for him. Why can't you respect that. We have NO idea what was going on behind the scenes and what actually led to his decision being made at this specific time. I think its not any of oiur places to judge, we are just fans, and if someone doesn't want to be what we want him to be, that gives us the right to condemn him as a loser?? fucc that. I respect the fact that something else in his life was more important than the money, ist refreshing in pro sports and we complain all too much about athletes being greedy and selfish and all about tha money. I do agree about the timing not being the greatest thou. WEe have no place to judge thou and I wish him peace of mind in his new endevours

Obviously they based his pay on some criteria, ie. yardage and TDs. So if he doesn't make what they consider to be that criteria, then it is considered to effect on-field performance. The pay is based on what he can do for the team, I am pretty sure you can tell if he is worth the money or not.
