Told Sonics what to expect

TORONTO - Vince Carter didn't leave Toronto without a little controversy.
According to the Tacoma (Wash.) News Tribune, three members of the Sonics said that Carter allegedly tipped off Seattle players to a play the Raptors were going to run in the final minute of Toronto's 101-94 loss to the Sonics Nov. 19.
The Raptors, who were down by seven with 29 seconds remaining in the game at the time of the alleged incident, still scored on the play.
Carter did not attend yesterday's game, however he did issue a statement through the team saying, "I have no comment. It's a non-issue." He joined the Nets at the airport and flew with the team to Charlotte last night.
The Nets, who acquired Carter in a four-player deal on Friday, were unaware of the controversy but didn't seem to be too worried about their new teammate.
"Who won the game?" Jason Kidd asked. "Was it on a last-second shot? It had no effect on the game. Who cares if it was a flare (play) or not a flare? It hurt Seattle because they knew what was coming and they still were able to score."
"I've heard guys saying (a play) is coming to me," Kidd added. "Then you have to try and stop it. It is part of the game, a little trash talking. I don't think it is so much tipping. This isn't baseball."
The story, which the NBA could always decide to investigate, only gave Carter's critics more ammunition to work with. Many in Toronto were happy to see Carter go after the five-time All-Star asked to be traded in the offseason.
Carter, who was the face of the Raptors franchise, fell out of favor with some fans and media here after missing 70 games over his previous three seasons with injuries. Some questioned his toughness and priorities. Carter is on the injured list with an Achilles injury. While he is eligible to be activated for tomorrow's game against the Bobcats, Carter said he could be out for a few more games.
Raptors GM Rob Babcock learned about the alleged incident for the first time last Wednesday when the Tacoma newspaper called him. Babcock then traded Carter two days later to the Nets for Alonzo Mourning, Aaron Williams, Eric Williams and two conditional first-round picks.
"I am not aware of the incident, just from this reporter's perspective," Babcock said before yesterday's game against the Nets. "Many players will do things like that, sometimes joking, sometimes as a challenge. If you are going to do something like that, you better win the game. I don't know the parameters around it at all." According to the report, Carter informed members of the Sonics bench that the Raptors would run a "flare" play for him, which they did. Carter then passed to Matt Bonner, who hit a jumper. "I just heard about it this morning," Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said. "There's nothing I can do about it now. The Seattle game is over, it's in the past. Vince is in New Jersey. It does me no good to respond to that. I wish Vince well. Life moves on."
