Gretzky Says Lockout Could Last Two Years If No Deal Soon

    Email this Story

    Jan 3, 11:57 AM (ET)

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - Wayne Gretzky fears the NHL could be shut down for as long as two years if a labor deal is not reached soon.
Gretzky, the NHL's all-time leading scorer and part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, said an "even more alarming" scenario could await the league if the lockout is not settled in the next few days.

"I'm scared we could be looking at a year, year-and-a-half, two years, not just three months like a lot of people thought back in September," Gretzky said at a news conference Sunday at the World Junior Championships, where Canada will meet Russia in Tuesday's final.

The NHL board of governors is to meet Jan. 14 in New York. The league rejected a union proposal and its own counteroffer was turned down during a session Dec. 14. No new talks are scheduled.

"From the standpoint of owners, players and fans, everyone is disappointed there is no hockey," Gretzky said.

Since the players are not paid between April and October, Gretzky said there may be little chance of any breakthrough during the summer on a new collective bargaining agreement.

"We're going to be back where we were last Sept. 15th come this Sept. 15th," he said.

Gretzky played in the world juniors for Canada when he was 16.

"I was lucky," he said. "The only reason I made the team is because a couple of older guys got hurt. I was a young kid, and I enjoyed it. I was in awe."

Let the NHL, as it is now, die. Then bring back some other league with a collective bargaining agreement. Just scrap the whole damn thing and start fresh.

P.S. Fuck all ya's all. Hockey RUUUULZE!!!

from what i've read about you, i don't know if i should be seen agreeing with you but... yeah, fuck all y'all -HOCKEY DOES FUCKING RULE!!!

the sad part has been exemplified here on this thread... no one but hockey people really care. i agree. maybe they should start fresh. smaller league more talent per team... maybe better promotion for better tv deals and exposure. damn, i miss the nhl on tv. good thing i am not one of those pathetic souls who says they love a sport but doesn't get to play it... if i'm not playing hockey, i'm coaching youth hockey, and if not that i'm at a sc stingrays game with my family/ friends. peace out.

I have desperately missed every freakin' night of having no hockey. I might go clinically insane if the Patriots don't win the Superbowl and I'm left with only the Celtics for a month until the Red Sox report to Ft. Myers.

I watch college hockey on a daily basis, again watching my Eagles day in and day out. It's just as good as professional hockey, but theres just that something that makes the NHL such an awesome league.

man, i am jealous! i agree, knowing that you're watching "the best" guys playing in "the best" league is special but the grit and intensity of college puck is rarely matched by the pro's except during the final stretch of the season and the playoffs.

Check out the AHL, you can actually afford the tickets without a second mortgage and the play is much more physical and fun to watch. Philly Phantoms are doin good this year!

I Live and Breath Hockey, but I am sick of the BS in the NHL.

The NHL is fucked, both the players and owners are fucked, and I don't give a shit who is right. They need to put differences aside and sort this shit out.

The NHL fucked up years ago when new arenas started to be built. This was the perfect opportunity to go to Olympic sized ice surfaces. Big Fuck up IMO

Fuck up number to is just recent prolly the last 5-10 years. All this Trap shit and Clutching and Grabbing has ruined hockey. No wonder they can't get a National TV contract when the Star players can't display there skills.

Here is a question for you name one NHL Star that attracts crowds, in opposing Arena's.... I can't think of any. The last I remember were Gretzky and Lemieux. That explains everything right there

You wanna see amazing hockey. The World Juniors were played over the Holidays and the Final is tonite, between the Russians and the Canadians (of Course ) This is Hockey where the Skilled get to play. The referee makes calls on any stick infraction. Absolutely no tolerance, which is the way it should be played. I hope the Canadians Destroy the Russians, especially after the ignorant diplay the Russians showed against the Americans in the Semi.

But Fuck the NHL. There is better Hockey out there were the players give a shit and come out and play night in and night out, not just during the playoffs.

I have not read all of this thread but I really hope the owners stick to their guns on this one. The balance of power in most of professional sports has tilted too far towards the "unions."

If the NHL owners win, maybe the baseball owners will grow a set and decide to add a salary cap.

Let the NHL die, no one misses it now, they won't in a few years, either.

This lockout became inevitable once the Whalers left Hartford

i sense resentment from the whalers fan. seriously, there are lots of people who miss it. maybe not anyone you know but fuck, what sports do you play and have a life-long commitment to? if they suddenly disappeared, you'd be upset too.
