I'm assuming you're referring to football, b/c it's the only sport that I know of that uses such a designation. First of all, it's often used on a player whose contract is about to run out. Once you are designated a "franchise player", you basically can not leave the team. BUT, it also forces the team to pay you amongst the top 5 players in the league at YOUR position. So, it guarantees the player top dollar, and it ensures the team they'll get to keep their best player (or one of their best)
