    Antonio Gates

Antonio Gates, freak TE of San Diego, signed a 380,000 dollar, one year contract with the chargers today. He was facing an ultimatum of a 3 game suspension if he didn't sign and get into camp. Amazing player, making millions less than he should be, completely robbed. Any1 else hear about this? Not another T.O. situation.

He was really good last year. I hope he gets more. Wasn't he a basketball player that didn't play college football and just walked in and tried out?

Regardless, I wonder if TEs will have a big year like last year. Maybe ppl thought it was a fluke.

Yea, he was a college basketball player, was convinced to go out for football somtime in college, phenom, etc. He's officially making a 380k contract this year, signed it yesterday, kind of forced to or else he would be supspended, what a joke.

When does he become a free agent?

? Cold Pizza jsut ended, and they had a long segment about it, and him signing a 380k, 1 year contract. Maybe it was an extension but I doubt it.

It was not an extension, it was a contract just for this one year.

Let him play like Tony Gonzalez for a couple of years before he gets TG money.

How so? They told him to get to camp or he'd be suspended. He didn't, they suspended him.

He was in no position to demand more money under the CBA.

smart for both sides. they needed to pony up the money for him or else he would have been gone. he is going to have a huge year this fall, even more so going into a situation where he could have been a restricted-free agent. al davis loves to take players away from fellow afc west teams and would have been chomping at the bit to sign him away from the san diego chargers.

yep..hate to use the cliche but this was "win-win"

I hear the reason for the suspension was to get Gates into camp so that they could tell him what was offered. When they did, Gates was agreeable...so, this all boils down to agents being the root of all evil.

Exactly. Rosenhaus is turning the NFL, and contracts in general into a joke.
