Joe Montana vs. John Elway. It doesn’t get much better than that. Elway scored on a quarterback sneak with 1:29 left to give the Broncos a 28-24 lead over the Chiefs. But Montana, in his final season, was still capable of a magical comeback, leading a dazzling final drive that was capped by a touchdown pass to Willie Davis with eight seconds to go that gave Kansas City a 31-28 win.

During a Redskins-Cowboys showdown, Howard Cosell called Washington receiver Alvin Garrett a “little monkey.” Although Cosell claims he often used the term to describe a small, quick player, many thought it was a racist comment. The controversy got the ’83 season off to an ugly start and it would end up being Cosell’s final year doing the show.

Most Americans turned off their TV sets after the Dolphins gained a 30-7 fourth-quarter lead over the rival Jets. But New York fought back to tie the game at 37-37 on a 3-yard scoring pass from Vinny Testaverde to tackle-eligible Jumbo Elliott with 42 seconds remaining in regulation. Jets kicker John Hall hit the decisive 40-yard field goal in overtime in a game that was dubbed “The Monday Night Miracle.”

With a frenzied crowd shaking powder blue pom-poms and singing the “Houston Oilers” song, Earl Campbell ran right through the Dolphins for 199 yards and four touchdowns. Only three other NFL players, Eric Dickerson, Emmitt Smith and Shaun Alexander, have run for four TDs in a game.

In the second quarter of a key Giants-Redskins showdown, Joe Theisman handed the ball to John Riggins, who flipped it back to the Redskins quarterback for a flea-flicker. Linebacker Lawrence Taylor wasn’t fooled and stormed in and tackled Theisman, who suffered a career-ending broken leg on the play.

Dan Marino’s Dolphins took on the 12-0 Bears, who appeared unstoppable. Miami had to protect the legacy of the undefeated 1972 Miami team, and Marino had an inspired game. The Dolphins bought him enough time to pass downfield and build a 21-point lead enroute to a 38-24 victory, which included two touchdown passes to Nat Moore (left). The show gained a Nielsen rating of 29.6 with a 46 share – the highest rated broadcast ever for Monday Night Football.

During a break of the Patriots-Dolphins game, Howard Cosell told the American public that John Lennon had been murdered earlier that day. In an era in which there weren’t as many media outlets, Cosell broke the news to many Americans. Lennon was one of the many famous guests who had joined the MNF booth over the years and was a big fan of the show.

No sympathy from me. My wife lost in the semi-finals by .6 for the exact same reason. I thought for sure the Pat's defense would put up huge numbers, but it didn't work out. We could have been #1 and #2. As it is now I'm headed for the championship round and she's competing for 3rd.

I worked that game. I was stationed in the broadcast booth right under John Madden and Al Michaels. You would have seen my head if I stood up. I had to work Christmas and Monday. Boring game but it wasn't bad. 16.5 hour day on Monday.

That was a great game. I'm not a fan of either team, but I stayed up because I love football. I couldn't believe they came back. Just like the Colts coming back a few years back, another great one.

No doubt. That absolutely sucks. I'd rather lose by 20 than .02
