Actors as Fighters: Who was the Most Convincing?
27.03.06 - By Craig Parrish: Hollywood loves fight pictures. While they are not as common as they used to be, it still seems like every year or so we get at least one movie that centers around boxing. Some are good, some are bad, and some are just plain silly. Over the years, many actors have taken on the daunting task of trying to portray a prize fighter realistically in the ring. This would prove especially difficult as most boxers spend a great majority of their childhood and adolescent years training, and in essence grow up in the Ring. Most actors have a limited amount of time they can spend training for a role. So I thought it would be an interesting idea to take a poll of fight fans opinions to see what people think.
Please respond to this article with your choices and I will tally up the responses after a certain number have been posted. Please post your picks, 1 through 5 only once, so we get an accurate count. Professional boxers who portrayed fighters in films should not be listed. Obviously, there are not many people who have seen every boxing film ever made. Here’s my top five from the movies I’ve seen over the years:
1) Daniel Day-Lewis, THE BOXER
2) Robert DeNiro, RAGING BULL
3) Michael Jai White, TYSON
4) Kirk Douglas, CHAMPION
5) Russel Crowe, CINDERELLA MAN
My vote is DeNiro hands down in Raging Bull, who do you think was the most convinsing????

Meh, I haven't seen any boxing movies that seemed believable.
Maybe Brad Pitt in Fight Club and Snatch?
He seems to take to those fighting roles pretty well

The Raging Bull of course.
I thought Hiliary Swank was pretty convincing as a women boxer, not to mention the movie was very good. I don't necessarily think the fight scenes were completely believable, but then again not many movie boxing matches are realistic. That's just because the public wants to see nothing but KO punches otherwise the movie wouldn't make as much...I just think she has the right look. Her size and a sort of rugged look that a lot of women boxers have.

Hulk Hogan as Thunderlips.
Tommy Morrison in Rocky 5.
Robin Williams in that boxing scene from Popeye.

Actors as Fighters: Who Was the Most Convincing? Poll ResultsOriginally Posted by ForemanRules
04.04.06 - By Craig Parrish: A few days ago we took a poll of boxing fans to get their opinion of which actor has portrayed a boxer the most convincingly on the silver screen. Although the poll was meant to ascertain which actor looked themost like a true fighter in the ring, the fans seemed to expand upon it and chose which actors they felt did the best job overall.
The results were a little difficult to tabulate, so basically the performers were judged upon the amount of positive comments/votes they received in the comments. Below is the list of the top ten, judged by true boxing fans:
1) Robert DeNiro, RAGING BULL
2) Sylvester Stallone, ROCKY series
3) Carl Weathers, ROCKY series
4) Russell Crowe, CINDERELLA MAN
5) Will Smith, ALI
6) Michael Jai White, TYSON
7) Daniel Day-Lewis, THE BOXER
8) Mr. T, ROCKY III
9) Denzel Washington, THE HURRICANE
10) (TIE) Hillary Swank, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, Wesley Snipes, UNDISPUTED
