Sounds like a good rule to me
In my home state there is a new high school football rule. If a team wins the game by 50 points or more, the winning coach will be suspended for 1 game. There is no concession for they're defense, special teams or jv scoring late to put them over the limit. There is an appeal process, but the school must demonstrate that there was no way to avoid going over the limit

I think this is horseshit! They're trying to protect the kids from embarrasement and hurt feelings. I've played on great squads and lousy ones, and was on the losing end of some blowouts. That made me just practice and work that much harder. And not to mention, coaches need their lower classmen to get work and show them something for the upcoming years. If anything I think its good for these kids to learn how to deal with dissapointment, rather than to protect them from it. And here is the kicker, when figuring the power rankings (which decide playoff teams
) they factor in total points scored and margain of defeat.

On the surface it does, but in reality a hard and fast rule for running up the score is absurd. As a coach, you can control the scoreboard by NOT playing starters, by even playing the third string and to a point via play calling.
However, you can't tell a kid who is on the field for the first time in forever to lay down. Those kids want to play too.
I say running up the score is similar to pornography...I can't really define it, but I know it when I see it.

You can run third string players and work your worst plays and still run away vs some teams. Especially with a small tallented team where you really have no third string, but rather a few second stringers that are not too bad them selves. I wouldn't tell a group of boys to play their worst for nothing ...... they work hard and deserve to play hard when the time comes. Giving Jerry's Kids a break is the right thing to do but only to a point then it's beyond our right as coaches to ask.
"Okay we can only drive ten er 20 yards then we gotta tank plays till we turn over on downs guys" Not a chance.
I saw this rule, it is based on good intentions, one team ran up the score on 4 teams last year so they came up with this. Problem is, you shouldn't punish a team for playing well, and as mentioned, there are extraneous circumstances that could occur such as a 4th stringer returning a kick for a TD whiel they are up by 45 points.
Whatever happened to divisions based on school size?

A lot of areas couldn't support that Dale. Here in Austin the schools are all over crowded so it doesn't really matter but out in the surrounding country areas some of the schools have a population of like 70 total students.
If there are only 70 students, how could they form a football team?

Lol ... it gets done. These little schools have a lot of heart ... you'd be amazed.
I went to a small school. My class had 45 students.
The football roster was about 20 kids. Most played both ways. I remember I came off the field for kickoffs, which were rare.

According to the rule, that 4th stringer needs to take a knee!Originally Posted by Dale Mabry
Our state does break up the classes according to male student body size, but the divisions are decided by area, and contain all classes. But this is irrelevant, because the coach who this rule is nicknamed after is from the 6th smallest school out of about 150. And the only time class is involved is when states come around, the top four teams by in each class by power ranking get into that class championship. But how can you have this rule, if your gonna factor in points scored and margain of victory into the power rankings? There are times when there are 6 undefeated teams in a class and the points scored and points against are a huge factor. All I'm saying is that I went from playing on a 1-10 team my sophmore year to playing on a 13-0 state championship team my senior year. and if you ask me, that terrible record year was just as fun as the championship year, not to mention the chip we had on our shoulders playing all those teams that blew us out the years before!

They should have a running clock if up by that much. Taking the ablity away to crush a football team just shows the continuning pussifcation that is been force fed to kids. Next they arent going to keep score anymore because it hurts feelings and everyone should get a ribbon. I got a place for those ribbons.
It is a horseshit rule, period! It should be all coaches discretion. Face it there are going to be asshole coaches out there, deal with it. Such is life. Our state has a 40 point rule. If you are up by 40 or more then the clock continues to run, but it does not say you can't continue to score!

The school I went to for my JR/SR year had 25 seniors, five of us played football, the rest were freshmen, sophmores and juniors. 16 players in all, 13 after report cards came out and no pass no play took 3 out. I played several different positions and only got to rest on timeouts and injuries. We played some schools that had enough seniors to have exclusive offense/defense and special teams. We still made district champs my senior year we just had to work alot harder and train longer everyday.Originally Posted by Pepper

I think it would hurt a player trying to break school/ district records as well which would suck especially for a player trying to get scouted by a college.

Wimberly & Liberty Hill are outlying towns of Austin and they're not small and they both kill in the 3A division. Wimberly came out of no where to win the State title last season.Originally Posted by BoneCrusher

The losing coach should get punished if they lose by more than 40 points not the winning coach.

Personally, I think that is competely fucking stupid.
