Oh No Zito/Giants Make Deal: 7 Years For 120 Million

"Zito's deal ties for the sixth largest overall, matching the $126 million, seven-year extension agreed to this month by Toronto and center fielder Vernon Wells. Previously, the largest contract for a pitcher was Mike Hampton's $121 million, eight-year deal with the Colorado Rockies before the 2001 season."

A's fans saw it coming. But there was no way we thought it was gonna be with our cross-bay rivals. I thought the Yanks/Sox or some other high power team would snag him.

I would love to see a salary cap in other sports besides hockey.

God damn is that a lot of money to give Barry Zito. I do think he will do really well in San Francisco. It's the National League, it's a weak division, and it's a pitcher's park. And anytime a good AL pitcher moves to the NL, I'm happy.

I hope the Yankees keep Randy Johnson though because I think trading him will make them stronger.

Hey, for once IAB and I agree! So when are Schilling and Papelbon going to the NL?

I was hoping the Yankess would try to get Zito, but it doesn't seem as if either the Yankees or the Red Sox were seriously interested in him.

So let's break this down...he's making $18 million a season, will start roughly 30 times? Maybe 40 with playoffs. Pitch 6-7 innings average per game, that's 21 outs max per game.

So every OUT he's making $21,400. More than some people make in a year and he only works every five days. That's IF he doesn't get hurt. AND he's not even one of the top ten pitchers in the league.

Professional sports is getting ridiculous. All this did was open the door for a $20 million contract for somebody better. Then 25, then 30...when does it stop? MLB could use a cap, it's been great for both hockey and football. I could care less about baseball at this point.

Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

Yea it is ridiculous... if the MLB doesnt institute a strict salary cap sooner than later it's going to fall apart.

This Zito deal is going to be a spark for multiple holdouts and strikes over the next few years.

Fellas you have to realize thats exactly what Zito is, average. Hes nothing spectacular. He doesnt have over powering stuff, unless you call that curveball overwhelming. Hell just sit curve and adjust fastball. This guy will win 12-15 games and is way way overpaid. Besdies why would you pay a pitcher that much, who isnt going to win 20+ for sure?

Zito has been a bust and Randy is long gone.

When you and IAB agree it's not good.

Ouch!

He became the third major-league pitcher in the last 52 years to fall to 0-6 before May 1, Dave Stewart (1984) and Mike Maroth (2003) being the others. Zito's ERA stands at 7.53.
