It's true: No one gives a shit about hockey anymore

The NHL has no one to blame but themselves.

ESPN - Stanley Cup Game 3 equals record low ratings

Bummer too, since the game is really fun to watch.

It really is too bad, but when someone like me who didn't have access to Versus all season saw a total of two games on television (two random sundays when I was hungover and in bed) I can understand why people aren't as excited about the sport anymore.

it doesn't snow in the majority of the U.S. in the winter. That would make it very hard for hockey to become popular.

I used to pay attention to the Dallas Stars ... but Global warming is going to kill hockey anyway so why bother?

MMA is normally an indoor sport with AC running and they have them ring girls . No pretty women in hockey. The fights are okay, but I like the ones in MMA better.

    Canadian ratings are crazy

But Bettman is a douche bag, that basically explains why it is a shitty draw in the states. Who the fuck cares about Anaheim and Ottawa.

Who the fuck even gets Versus.

if the current trend continues, i see a future where hockey is not even televised in this country and the sport dies

See the thing is Hockey is getting to be as exciting as it was skill wise back in the early 90's

Bettman screwed up with some really shitty expansion locations. ie. Nashville, Florida, Carolina, Phoenix.

Hockey won't die. It may not be a tier 1 sport in the US. But between Canada, Europe and the Northern US. There is more then enough support to keep it exciting.

Anyone would be better then Bettman. Basketball was doing shit when he was running it. Hockey was at its best before he came.

Lets see what happened to both sports.

if no one in this country watches even playoff games, they will stop showing them on tv cuz they will lose money. without the NHL, hockey would lose any exposure it has going

    Hockey is a niche market.

Bettman was stupid thinking it would do anything for ratings by expanding into shit markets. The only way it will work is through development of minor league programs with the kids in the NHL markets. But then you are looking at a 20+ year turn around to make things work.

    ie. Bettman = retard.

Bettman is a moron. he should have done what the NBA and NFL were doing long ago and thats market their superstars. all you'd see would be Kobe, or O'Neal or (I'm not really big on football so you chose a name here) Rice...ahh McNabb??? haha..really though they learned how to market their players and get the names worked into a household name. only now is fuckhead, I mean Bettman, realizing he should have done that and now you see a bit more marketting from the NHL through Crosby, Ovechkin, Thornton and even Brodeur and Robataille (former NHLer) is on a Delissio commercial..thats what they should have been doing long ago, marketting the superstars.

Our former beloved Jets ... that's okay, Phoenix can have 'em.

Bettman's a fuckin' moron, which pretty much sums up the situation with hockey.

Indeed. There isn't all that clutching and grabbing like there was prior to the lockout and the game is more wide open now. If these new rules were in place 15 years ago, Mario Lemiuex would have put up a few more 150 point seasons later in his career.

Hockey isn't going away, but I don't see it being as popular as it used to be anytime soon.

    Yep basically.

Bettman made the NBA shit when he was there.

He came to the NHL fucked it up. And had the opportunity to make ammends after the strike. But he fucked that up by trying to promote the NHL instead of the players that make it. Remember all the commercials when the NHL came back from the strike. How fucking lame was that.

I watched hockey whenever Tony Twist played for the Blues and he always fought Bob Probert! That was fuckin awesome. Everytime they took the ice together you knew Tony was going to stomp his ass......as for the game itself its a snore fest to me, unless I am actually there then you learn to appreciate the hits they take!

Brett Hull scoring 86 goals would have been more interesting to see IMO.

Hockey is far from boring. But if you never played, then I could understand your disinterest. It is a little to complex for the simple minded

Brett Hull was always a bitch. Cried cause he couldn't make team Canada, so changed his citizenship to play for the US. Waaaaah
