- UFC RATINGS REPORT: TUF & UFC FIGHT NIGHT
Saturday, September 22, 2007 - by Ivan Trembow - MMAWeekly.com

The season premiere of The Ultimate Fighter and the newest live installment of UFC Fight Night both drew overall ratings of 1.5 on Wednesday, September 19.

The general pattern over the course of the three-hour block of original programming on Spike TV was that the ratings gradually increased over the course of the two-hour UFC Fight Night broadcast, and then gradually decreased over the course of the one-hour Ultimate Fighter broadcast.

The overall rating for any given TV broadcast is rounded to the nearest tenth of a ratings point. The exact average rating of the TUF broadcast was 1.4675, which rounds to 1.5; and the exact average rating of the UFC Fight Night broadcast was 1.545, which also rounds to 1.5 even though it is slightly higher than TUF's average.

In the case of UFC Fight Night 11, the broadcast out-drew a regular season baseball game on ESPN by impressive margins of 74% in total viewership, 224% in the advertiser-coveted demographic of 18-to-34-year-old males, and 233% in the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic.

UFN 11 Ratings vs. UFC's Average Ratings; Plus Ratings for Each Individual Fight

The ratings for UFC Fight Night 11 were below the UFC's average-to-date for live event premieres on Spike TV. Since April 2005, the UFC had 18 live event premieres on Spike TV prior to UFC Fight Night 11, and those 18 broadcasts averaged a 1.8 overall rating, compared to 1.5 for UFN 11.

In the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic, the UFC's average rating for its first 18 live event premieres on Spike TV was 2.9, compared to 1.9 for UFC Fight Night 11.

In the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic, the UFC's average rating for its first 18 live event premieres on Spike TV was 2.3, compared to 1.7 for UFC Fight Night 11.

The opening fight on the UFC Fight Night 11 broadcast was Nate Quarry's comeback victory over Pete Sell, which drew a 1.3 rating. Sell's previous fight on Spike TV was against Scott Smith in November 2006, and that fight drew a 1.1 rating.

The next fight on the broadcast was Nate Diaz' victory over Junior Assuncao, which drew a 1.5 rating. Diaz' previous fight on Spike TV, which was against Manny Gamburyan in June 2007, drew a 2.3 rating.

The next fight was Chris Leben's win over Terry Martin, which drew a 1.7 rating. Leben's previous fight on Spike TV was against Jorge Santiago in August 2007, and that fight drew a 1.4 rating.

The main event match-up, featuring Kenny Florian's win over Din Thomas, maintained the same 1.7 rating that the Leben-Martin fight drew. Florian's previous fight on Spike TV was against Dokonjonosuke Mishima in April 2007, and that fight drew a 1.1 rating. Thomas' previous fight on Spike TV was against Rich Clementi in November 2006, and that fight drew a 1.2 rating.

TUF Premiere Ratings vs. Previous TUF Premiere Ratings

The viewership level for The Ultimate Fighter's season premiere decreased slightly from a 1.6 rating at the beginning of the show to a 1.4 rating at the end of the show, as Mac Danzig's submission victory over Joe Scarola drew a 1.4 rating.

The overall ratings for the Season Six premiere were up slightly from the Season Five premiere, and down slightly from the Season Four premiere.

The fourth season premiere of TUF drew a 1.7 overall rating in August 2006; the fifth season premiere drew a 1.4 overall rating in April 2007; and the sixth season premiere drew a 1.5 overall rating on Wednesday night.

In the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic, the fourth season premiere of TUF drew a 2.8 rating; the fifth season premiere drew a 1.9 rating; and the sixth season premiere also drew a 1.9 rating.

In the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic, the fourth season premiere of TUF drew a 2.2 rating; the fifth season premiere drew a 1.8 rating; and the sixth season premiere drew a 1.7 rating.

Even with the slight decreases from the previous two season premieres, TUF 6 was still the second most-watched show of the day on cable television in the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic.

Other UFC & Spike TV Ratings

Immediately prior to the live broadcast of UFC Fight Night on Wednesday, September 19, a new episode of UFC Unleashed aired on Spike TV and drew an overall rating of 0.8.

Airing immediately after the season premiere of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV was the series premiere of "Manswers," which drew an overall rating of 0.9.

On Thursday night, September 20, a replay of The Ultimate Fighter drew an overall rating of 0.6, and the second airing of "Countdown to UFC 76" drew an overall rating of 0.5. The first airing of "Countdown to UFC 76" on Monday night, September 17, drew an overall rating of 0.2.

UFC 76 Official Weigh-In Results; Jon Fitch Weighs in Heavy

Posted by MMA Junkie on September 21, 2007 at 7:05 pm ET

UFC 76 weigh-ins took place today at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., the same venue that will play host to tomorrow’s pay-per-view event.
Welterweight Jon Fitch was the only fighter not to make weight.

The American Kickboxing Academy’s rising contender, who weighed in at 172 pounds, has one hour to get down to 171 pounds to avoid any penalties/fines from the California State Athletic Commission.

Tomorrow’s show features a main event between former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell and Keith Jardine. Additionally, top welterweight contenders Diego Sanchez and Fitch square off, while Forrest Griffin battles UFC newcomer Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

MMAjunkie.com (UFC news, MMA news, UFC rumors, UFC gossip, fighter interviews and event previews and recaps - MMAjunkie.com (formerly UFCjunkie.com)) has a special correspondent on the scene in Anaheim this weekend, so we’ll have live, round-by-round updates of both the main-card and preliminary fights tomorrow night.

Today’s full weigh-in results included:

MAIN CARD
  • Keith Jardine (204.5 lbs.) vs. Chuck Liddell (205.5 lbs.)
  • Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (205 lbs.) vs. Forrest Griffin (205 lbs.)
  • Jon Fitch (172 lbs.)* vs. Diego Sanchez (170 lbs.)
  • Lyoto Machida (205.5 lbs.) vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura (205 lbs.)
  • Tyson Griffin (155.5 lbs.) vs. Thiago Tavares (154.5 lbs.)
UNDERCARD

Yeah. The whole time, I said at the bar...someone I know just made a lot of money..

Tyson Griffin might have been my favorite fight.

2nd one...shit I forget his name, but that fight was BORING.

Sanchez fought a good fight. He did the best he could, but he was legitimately beaten. Fitch was a step ahead every step of the way. I LOVED how Sanchez just ran out in the beginning! Then I was when he kept hitting gloves. I was surprised he was booed.

Forrest...shit, if it wasnt for Tyson's fight, this would have been my fav. What a way to go. I was extremely surprised Shogun gassed. Coming from 10min rounds and gassing?!

Jardine looked nervous as hell! But it worked.

I thought Sanchez's fight and Liddell's fight shouldve been unanimous.

Now, here come the nay-sayers... .

Tavares got robbed IMO I saw that 29-28 in his favor, Machida won me some fake money, Fitch won fair and square, Forrest went out there and took it to "the best LHW in the world" no questions asked, and it would have been the crime of the century had Jardine not won that decision. I thought it was a crime that it was split. AWESOME event.

If that's the case, Tavares out-pointed Griffin in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, just like Guida did vs. Griffin and Griffin got that decision too. Bottom line is the scoring is fucked.

That part Ill agree with. Learning MMA's rules about taking someone to the ground and getting points, I feel that it needs to be a little scrutinized.

I had zero doubt that Tyson wont that fight, but when I saw it was split, I was extremely surprised..along with 2 other MMA fans that seemed to be more dedicated that I was.

Speaking of people....the bar I was at wasnt as crowded as a usual Liddell fight is...did anyone else have some roomy space at the bars? (for those that wanted to watch the fight for free; I paid $26 for my beer and chicken sandwich! )

PSL was probably crowded because all of us "back home" are a bunch of showboating assholes who enjoy Chuck and Din and driving F250's without our shirts on.

Two of my favorite fighters lost tonight. I had high hopes for Tavares but put him on a growing list of fighters that lost a questionable decision to Griffin, and I truly thought Diego would win tonight but Fitch was just the better man.

On the other hand, I couldn't be happier about Shogun losing. We can finally put the PRIDE > UFC bullshit to bed. Seriously. No excuses, Shogun got handled tonight and would have lost a decision had it lasted 15 more seconds.

And Chuck... What can I say about that shit!?! Jardine went in there and bruised up the Iceman, took his left leg away and welted the shit out of his midsection. Clear cut ass-kick and I'm stoked. I thought tonight was one of the best cards ever, simply because of the title bout implications and the "changing of the guard" so to speak in MMA. Very historical event if nothing else.

Again, I was surprised that Shogun was so out of it. But fuck him, it was great that he lost. Myself and the entire bar loved it! Great upset!

YOU know I dont like Liddell, but I dont care about Jardine. Not care for Jadine...I just dont care about the fighter. If he lost I wouldve been fine, just as if he had won.

My prediction was that hed lose, though, just cuz of Liddell's experience. Naturally, i was pleasantly surprised that it had lasted as long...and then had a decision in Jardines favor.

I like fight nights that have pleasant upsets. But bottom line, I just like good fights. I dont care who wins, just as long as they are worth the time by watching 2 fighters try their best. No lay & prays, no gun shy shit, no 1-hit wonders, just battles.
