Shamrock was a among a short list of possible opponents for the Miami native that also included Sean Gannon — the only man to defeat the YouTube.com sensation in underground fisticuffs — and Brett Rogers.
Out of the trio Rogers was far and away the most qualified and would have likely given Slice the stiffest competition. However, that could have been the problem — Elite XC matchmakers still feel the need to shamelessly build its biggest star.

And what better way then to have him wallop an over-the-hill, past-his-prime UFC veteran on national television.

Shamrock — a UFC Hall of Fame inductee — dropped his first and most recent bout under the ProElite banner, losing to Robert “Buzz” Berry via first knockout at Cage Rage 25: “Bring it On” earlier this year.

That, too, was supposed to be a warm-up for the “World’s Most Dangerous Man” to groom him for a big money match down the road against either Slice, or his younger brother, Frank.

It seems like it didn’t matter — at least one of those fights (Slice) is going to happen. Although a win against Berry would have made this appear (to the casual fan at least) to be somewhat of a fair fight.

Shamrock has lost eight of his last 10 fights dating back to 2001 and he’s on a five-fight losing skid.

The only thing in his favor going into this fight is experience and his submission game. Shamrock has won more than 80 percent of his fights via submission, which poses somewhat of a threat provided he can get close enough to Slice to take him down.

Don’t count on it. But then again stranger things have happened … kind of like this match up in the first place.

This is getting silly.

I see this in huge favor for Shamrock even though is coming from a 5(6?) fight losing streak. All he needs to do is take Kimbo down (easy) and then submit him (easy).

A stiff breeze will make Kimbo fall on his ass. If Ken can set up a takedown with punches, even if they are shitty, I don't see Kimbo being able to avoid the takedown. That is unless he has vastly improved on his takedown defense.

I don't know if you've seen any of Ken's last few fights, but he's semi-retarded these days. Ken has zero takedown skills and his jaw is like glass. Robert "Buzz" Berry just knocked him into next week a few months ago, a guy that was dominated by UFC reject Colin Robinson and choked out by Dan Severn not long before. I give Ken zero chance in this one.

I just find this a lose lose scenario.

If Ken wins, Ken wont be considered a "come back" person. At least, not to me. Simultaneously, everyone else will say that Kimbo has sucked from the get go.

If Kimbo wins, it will be another half ass win cuz its coming from an old man that has had consecutive losses.

To think that I actually thought Tank would be a good match up for Kimbo. Though we all know the results by now, I never knew how many losses Tank had in his record. Had I known nothing about Tank's interesting wins in the first UFCs and just knew about his record before the fight, I wouldve bet on Kimbo hands down.

yeah that is another thing that got my thinking the fight could be rigged. If they bring in a guy with consecutive losses like Ken and he beats Kimbo it would ruin Kimbo's name and I don't think EXC would want to build up Ken Shamrock in their franchise, he is old and shouldn't be fighting, it wouldn't go anywhere.

Their whole company is supported by toothpicks.

They should spend more time advertising guys like Lawler, Shields and Diaz as their top stars. Shit, they have Shields but you never hear anything about him other than mentioning his fight dates.

They've been trying desperately to get KJ Noons back in the ring with Nick Diaz for the title but Noons seems to be ducking.

Poor Shields is stuck, all the good 170lb talent is in the UFC. He's so desperate to fight top guys, just a few weeks ago he was trying to get on the next Affliction card to fight Lindland @ 185 . Paul Daley is no joke though, should be a decent test for him.

Put Kimbo up against a real fighter...Ken is over the hill and like mentioned they expect him to lose. It puts Kimbo up against a name, and not someone with abilities (anymore). I would love to see Kimbo vs a real UFC fighter. IMO Brock could give Kimbo and the viewers a real show. They are both huge non skilled brawlers who like to swing for the fences. Put Kimbo in the ring with a guy that has true talent like Fedor and he isn't even going to last through the 1st round.

Kimbo is nothing but a youtube street fighter that can throw a haymaker. He has never fought anyone that has ever hit him like a real fighter. All his youtube showings are lame as fuck chumps fighting a guy way bigger and stronger with the attempt to make money....and all the fighters in his pro career have been over the hills or nobodys..... Kimbo Slice seems like a nice guy with street cred, and that is about it. He would be picked apart by any top UFC fighter. Too much hype surounding him. He is not on the level of the top UFC guys, or even Pride for that matter.

If Urijah Faber and Leonard Garcia are victorious in their respective fights at World Extreme Cagefighting’s upcoming September 10 event in Hollywood, Florida, the two could potentially meet in a featherweight title showdown in Mexico.

Garcia revealed on today’s edition of TAGG Radio that the WEC has already scheduled a press conference featuring himself and Faber for the third week of September in Mexico City, where the WEC may be planning to hold a show in the near future.

“They’re flying me out six days after the (Pulver) fight to Mexico City to do a press conference and to make a huge announcement,” Garcia said on the radio show. “As I understand it, both Urijah and I are going...I think both of us just need to hold up our ends of the bargain on Sept. 10.”

In order for the two to headline the organization’s first show outside of the United States, they must first pass their respective tests on Sept. 10. Faber is scheduled to make another defense of his WEC featherweight title against American Top Team product Mike Thomas Brown while Garcia will have his hands full against former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver.

I guess they're already counting Jens out?

Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture could return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship by year's end as part of an out-of-court settlement with the organization.

Multiple sources close to the fighter, speaking exclusively to MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com), today said that Couture is willing to fight once more for the UFC, possibly before the end of the year, as a potentia; resolution to his ongoing legal battles with the fight promotion.

However, Couture himself could not be reached for comment, and it's unknown if the UFC is even considering the offer at this point.

According to one source, as part of Couture's concession to return the octagon, the 45-year-old UFC hall-of-famer would want to walk away "clear and free" from the organization after the bout.

Couture (16-8 MMA, 13-5 UFC), who hasn't fought since a third-round TKO victory over fellow UFC heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga in August 2007, resigned from the organization two months later over what he perceived to be a lack of respect from UFC officials, issues over his pay, and the UFC's inability to sign then-top free agent Fedor Emelianenko.

However, Zuffa LLC officials believe, per his fight contract, that Couture's next two bouts must be in the UFC. Couture had said that he wanted his resignation upheld so he could move on with his career, including a potential bout with Emelianenko outside the UFC.

Back in February, Couture signed a deal with Mark Cuban's Dallas-based HDNet Fights promotion. The organization then filed suit against the UFC in Dallas district court to get a declaratory judgment concerning the contractual status of Couture. However, earlier this month, a Texas appeals court ruled in favor of Zuffa and granted the organization's request for a stay against the motion.

In conditionally granting the stay, the court effectively deferred the case between Zuffa and Couture to arbitration to determine the fighter's contractual obligations to the UFC.

The ruling all but ensures that this case will be decided by a Nevada arbitrator and not by a Texas court, though it's likely that HDNet will appeal to the Texas Supreme Court. Arbitration between Zuffa and Couture reportedly has been under way in Las Vegas since early July.

Despite Couture's resignation, during a UFC 82 press conference in March, UFC President Dana White said that he had offered Couture a fight with now-interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on two different occasions. Although the fight never came to fruition, White has never ruled out the possibility of Couture returning to the organization.

In the other squabble between the UFC and Couture, the five-time champion's employment contract, which is separate from his fight contract, is the focus of a breach of contract lawsuit filed by Zuffa on Jan. 14 in Las Vegas. Zuffa contends that Couture violated the one-year non-compete clause in his contract by having his name and likeness used to promote fights outside of the UFC.

Couture's UFC employment contract expires on Oct. 11 of this year.

And rumor has it his opponent would be none other than Brock Lesnar.

Honestly? I think Randy is in real trouble here. I don't know if it experience matters considering Brock outweighs Randy by ohhh 60 pounds come fight time. He's obviously bigger and stronger than Randy, but the thing Brock has going for him is he's probably faster than Randy too. That's a crazy thing to say about a 290lb man comparing him to a man that will come in fight time at 225lbs. Not to mention wrestling won't be saving Randy this time.

As for Brock vs. Fedor? As of right now I'd have to say Fedor survives the initial onslaught and takes a Lesnar limb home for a souvenir. But... If Brock proves to be patient enough in his attacks to get through Couture, and more importantly Big Nog? I got Brock all day. He's just too big, fast and strong.
