Top five Super Bowls of all time
Top five Super Bowls of all time
BY HANK GOLA DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Tuesday, February 5th 2008, 4:00 AM PHOENIX - A year ago, we were discussing where Colts-Bears ranked among the worst Super Bowls ever. Now we can flip that. With the lead changing three times in the fourth quarter and Eli Manning directing a drive for the ages in the final two minutes in an upset of epic proportions, Super Bowl XLII has to be among the most exciting ever. The Daily News has it in the top five. You can decide for yourself. The countdown: Super Bowl XXV Giants 20, Bills 19 Holding the ball for 40:33 thanks to a brilliantly-executed game plan, the Giants hold their breath as Scott Norwood enters the halls of infamy by missing a 47-yard field goal one foot to the right. Super Bowl XXXVIII Patriots 32, Panthers 29 Adam Vinatieri's foot wins the Super Bowl for the second time in a thriller that produces 868 yards, and all 61 points in the final 34:05. Jake Delhomme nearly outduels Tom Brady down the stretch. Super Bowl XLII Giants 17, Patriots 14 A crushing defense punishes Tom Brady, whose late TD drive still forces Eli Manning to direct the defining march of his career. A mad scramble, an impossible catch by the unheralded David Tyree and a strike to Plaxico Burress against an all-out blitz ends the Patriots' quest for the perfect season. Super Bowl XXXIV Rams 23, Titans 16 Kevin Dyson's outstretched arm is frozen one foot from the goal line, stopped by Mike Jones on the game's final play. Super Bowl XXIII 49ers 20, Bengals 16 Joe Montana defines Joe Cool ("Hey, isn't that John Candy?" he asks in the huddle) when he leads the 49ers on a 92-yard drive in the final3:20, hitting John Taylor for the game-winner with 34 seconds left. Honorable mention to Lynn Swann's Super Bowl X, where Glen Edwards picked off Roger Staubach's last pass and Vinatieri's first game-winner in the Patriots' shocker over the Rams in XXXVI. |
