Jets boot Patriots 34-31 in overtime, move alone atop AFC East
![]() BY RICH CIMINI DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Updated Friday, November 14th 2008, 2:56 AM FOXBOROUGH - It was billed as a now-or-never game for the Jets. "Now" won. Barely. Ending years of torment at the hands of the Patriots, the Jets rose up Thursday night in their biggest regular-season game in recent memory, holding on for a dramatic 34-31 overtime victory at a cold and damp Gillette Stadium. PHOTO GALLERY: JETS 34, PATRIOTS 31 A first-half blowout turned into a 68-minute epic struggle - you didn't expect it to be easy, did you? - as the Jets, acting as if they were afraid to finish off their nemesis, blew 18- and seven-point leads. Brett Favre saved them from what would have been one of the most devastating defeats in franchise history, calmly leading a 14-play, 64-yard OT drive that ended with Jay Feely's 34-yard field goal with 7:10 on the clock. "This," Favre said, walking off the field, "is what I came back for." Winners of four straight, the Jets (7-3) seized sole possession of first place in the AFC East, moving one game ahead of the Patriots (6-4.) MYERS: WIN VALIDATES TRADE FOR FAVRE It was one not-so-small step in the standings, one giant step for Jetkind. They had lost 11 of 12 to the Patriots, but the Jets felt the Tom Brady-less version was vulnerable. And they were right, although the Patriots resembled the vampire that wouldn't die. "It's like winning a playoff game," tight end Chris Baker said in a euphoric locker room. Said guard Brandon Moore: "We weren't leaving here with a loss. That was our attitude." The Jets made it tougher than it had to be, getting tight as they squandered 24-6 and 31-24 leads, the latter on a 16-yard touchdown catch by Randy Moss with one second remaining in regulation. Moss beat newly signed Ty Law, a former Patriot, with a diving catch in the corner of the end zone. "That puts a little doubt in your mind," said Kerry Rhodes, referring to the Patriots' frantic, no-timeouts-left drive by young Matt Cassel (30-for-51, 400 yards, three TD passes). The Same Old Jets would've choked. But the Oldest Jet enhanced his legend in overtime. The Jets won the coin flip and Favre, after a first-play sack, was magic. In the crucible of the rivalry's most intense game ever, Favre completed five of six on the drive for 56 yards, including a 16-yard strike to rookie Dustin Keller (eight catches for 87 yards) from their own 15 - the play of the game. Throwing across his body, Favre also found Laveranues Coles for 16 yards, "Classic Brett Favre," said linebacker David Bowens. The Jets drove to the Patriots' 18 and, after eschewing a field-goal attempt on third down - one of several curious decisions by Eric Mangini - they sent in Feely. He made his eighth straight field goal, perhaps the biggest of his career. "You can't worry about the implications," Feely said. "You just focus on the process." Favre (26-for-33, 258 yards) owned the first half, throwing touchdown passes to Leon Washington on a 7-yard screen and to Jerricho Cotchery for 15 yards. Moments earlier, Cotchery had made a David Tyree-like grab on a 42-yard reception in which he caught it one-handed, falling backward. For the second straight game, Favre had no interceptions. Save for a fourth-quarter fumble by Cotchery (five catches for 87 yards), which led to a Patriots field goal, the Jets didn't make any killer mistakes. They received huge plays, including a 92-yard kickoff return by Washington and a 104-yard, one-touchdown rushing effort from Thomas Jones, but Mangini and coordinator Brian Schottenheimer got conservative. They failed to adjust when Bill Belichick put Cassel in the shotgun, a ploy that set back the Jets. Mangini called it an "ebb and flow game," claiming that the Jets used soft coverages to prevent big plays. Asked about the conservative play-calling on offense, Mangini said, "I promise you, we didn't change our approach one bit." When Moss scored - the replay booth said he had kept both feet inbounds - the Jets looked spent. Curiously, Law played "off' coverage after staying in Moss' face most of the night. That would have been the worst of all possible ways to lose to the Patriots, the Law acquisition blowing up in Mangini's face. "I made it a little tougher than it should've been," said Law, who covered Moss the entire night in nickel situations. Bowens, who missed a sack of the scrambling Cassel that would have ended the game, said, "I'm going to lose sleep over that. Thank God we won." It took an effort that left some players on the brink of exhaustion. "I think we showed a lot of heart, a lot of mettle," Feely said. The first-place Jets. How does that sound? Said Bowens: "I haven't heard that in ... ever." |

Jets suck balls... seriously. I don't see what all the hype is about.

Brett Favre, Jets hand Titans first loss of season, 34-13
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Sunday, November 23rd 2008, 6:55 PM NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Titans are unbeaten no more. Brett Favre and the New York Jets served notice they will be a factor in the AFC this season. Favre threw two touchdown passes, Leon Washington ran for two scores and the Jets routed the Titans 34-13 on Sunday, snapping the 13-game regular-season winning streak by the NFL's last undefeated team. The Jets (8-3) came in atop the AFC East after a victory over New England at Foxborough. They have won five straight for the first time since October 2004 and seven of their last eight. The win also pulled them within two of Tennessee (10-1) with five to play in the race for home-field advantage through the playoffs. PHOTO GALLERY: JETS BATTER THE TITANS The Titans hadn't lost since Dec. 16, 2007, in becoming only the 11th team since 1970 to win its first 10 games. This time, the NFL's stingiest scoring defense that had been allowing 13.1 points per game had no answer for Favre and the Jets, even with the return of defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch. The Jets spread out Tennessee, Favre threw fast and often, and they wore the Titans' defense down by keeping it on the field for more than 40 minutes. New York overcame two turnovers and two sacks in the first half by outgaining Tennessee on offense 409-281. This was only the third game in NFL history featuring two starting quarterbacks with more than 100,000 yards combined yards passing in Favre and Kerry Collins. Favre threw for 224 yards and had much more help than Collins, whose receivers dropped at least five passes in the first half, including one by Bo Scaife in Jets' territory with room to run. Favre took advantage of a Titans' secondary featuring Chris Carr starting at cornerback in place of Nick Harper, and he was flagged twice on one drive for pass interference. With the win, Favre broke a tie with Dan Marino for victories in the most NFL stadiums by winning in his 32nd at LP Field. Washington scored on runs of 61 and 4 yards in the fourth quarter as the Jets padded their lead. Jay Feely also kicked two field goals. The Jets led 10-3 at halftime and could have had an even bigger margin if not for two turnovers - the first at the Tennessee 21 at the end of the first quarter. Favre could not have started hotter as he completed his first eight passes for 89 yards, the sixth a 10-yard TD pass to Thomas Jones on the opening drive. The Titans went three-and-out on three of their first five drives and had only 55 yards offense until a final drive just before halftime when Rob Bironas finally put Tennessee on the scoreboard with a 43-yard field goal. Bironas added a 49-yarder in the fourth quarter. By the time Collins tossed a 6-yard TD pass to Ahmard Hall, it was too late. |

Impressive win. The Defense sealed it up for them, and ton of easy dropped passes early by the titans.
Still don't think the Jets are much.

Tennessee is the only Decent team they have beaten? And Tennessee handed the game to them early, by dropping an ton of easy passes.
They have one of the easiest schedules in the NFL. I stil think Pitts(toughest schedule in the NFL) would beat them, Baltimore would give them a good run. Heck even the Patriots seem to be firing on all cylinders. No doubt a significant improvement over last year. They have a good chance at a first round bye in the playoffs, but I would be surprised if they won that playoff game. Don't get me wrong I want them to make the Superbowl.... just so the Packers get a better pick.

This whole Jets/Patriots have the easiest schedule thing shouldn't last.
The Dolphins are a good team, as are the Bills. You can't say the same for the other AFC divisions. The AFC will come down to the Patriots and Jets, and of course the Patriots will win that show down. |

Jets fall back to earth with sloppy 34-17 loss to Denver Broncos
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Sunday, November 30th 2008, 8:18 PM Jay Cutler and the Denver Broncos stopped the surging Jets, and showed they might also be a team to reckon with in the wide-open AFC. Cutler passed for 357 yards and two touchdowns and rookie Peyton Hillis ran for 129 yards and a score in the Broncos' 34-17 victory over the Jets at a wet and windy Meadowlands on Sunday. The Broncos (7-5) washed away the sting of a 31-10 loss to Oakland at home last weekend by stopping the Jets' five-game winning streak. Denver leads the AFC West by three games with four weeks left. It was a disappointing loss for New York (8-4), which was coming off emotional victories at New England and Tennessee and was making a claim as the conference's top team. Cutler finished 27-of-43, and Hillis became the first to rush for 100 or more yards against the Jets' third-ranked run defense. Brandon Stokley and Eddie Royal each had touchdown catches, and tight ends Tony Scheffler and Daniel Graham combined for 13 catches and 149 yards. Thomas Jones had 138 yards rushing and two touchdowns for New York, but Brett Favre struggled in the sloppy conditions. He finished 23-of-43 for 247 yards and an interception. The Jets are still a game ahead of both New England and Miami in the AFC East. Broncos safety Vernon Fox gave the Broncos an early lead when he returned a fumble 23 yards for a touchdown on a controversial play midway through the opening period that set the tone for the game. Wide receiver Brad Smith took a direct snap and tried to hand off to Jerricho Cotchery, but the ball squirted away. Cotchery jumped on top of the bouncing ball and was immediately hit by Fox. The ball then came loose and Fox picked it up and returned it for a touchdown. Jets coach Eric Mangini threw out the red challenge flag, but the officials ruled Cotchery had never gained possession so it was still a fumble, and not a reviewable play. Jones tied it with a 59-yard touchdown run on the opening play of New York's next possession. Jones went up the middle, broke right and took off untouched down the sideline for the longest run in his career. Denver came right back four plays later when Royal, showing no signs of the toe injury that limited him in practice, scored on a 59-yard touchdown pass with 6:44 left. Mangini challenged the play, thinking Royal stepped out of bounds, but the call was upheld after a short review. Matt Prater's 25-yard field goal made it 17-7 with 1:44 remaining in the opening quarter. Jones scored his second touchdown on an athletic, heads-up play. On first-and-10 from Denver's 29, Jones took the handoff and went down near the line of scrimmage, but his body rolled over the Broncos' Kenny Peterson without touching the ground. Jones bounced up off the defender's back and zipped into the end zone, scoring a 29-yard touchdown — with many of the Broncos standing around, thinking the play was dead. After a review to check to see if Jones' left elbow touched the turf, officials upheld the original call. Denver took advantage of Dre' Bly's interception of Favre as Hillis scored on a 1-yard run to cap a seven-play drive that made it 24-14 late in the first half. Prater's 35-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining before halftime made it 27-14. Dwight Lowery's first NFL interception helped the Jets close within 10 as Jay Feely kicked a 30-yard field goal with 2:50 left in the third quarter. The Broncos had players injured — Spencer Larson, Ebenezer Ekuban and Bly — on consecutive catch-and-runs by Leon Washington on the drive. Stokley's 36-yard touchdown reception with 9:26 left sealed the victory for the Broncos. |

I think he means in future seasons, peeps would always say that the Pats had it easy because they got to play the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins 2x every year, next year that is not a good thing.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Mino, I won $1,400 betting on the Jets this weekend. Brett Farve is a wild card.

I guess he doesn't mind a losing record just as long as he cathes 10 balls a game...
Guess he forgot the QB is the straw that stirs the drink.
