It wouldn't.

If you add in Michael Bowden or Lars Anderson, that might change though.

Mets don't want Andruw Jones

There's probably a better chance of Cleon Jones playing for the Mets next season than Andruw Jones. Although an ESPN report last night indicated the Mets and Dodgers were in trade discussions that could potentially make Jones the Mets' new right fielder, a person familiar with the situation said it won't happen. Jones' name was mentioned to Mets GM Omar Minaya several weeks ago, but the discussions never intensified. Jones, the biggest bust in baseball not named Barry Zito, is due $15 million in 2009 after batting .158 with three homers and 14 RBIs last season.

Not really. Minaya only sign Dominicans/South Americans.

^ thats probably where the report came from initially.

Jones is old, out of his prime and latino. Surely Minaya has interest.

Ethnicities

A Bulawaya dance
Because of its history, the island's population comes from many ethnic backgrounds. There is a majority of mixed Afro-Caribbean and European descent, and also sizeable minorities of Dutch, Latin American, South Asian, East Asian, Portuguese and Levantine people. The Sephardic Jews that arrived from the Netherlands and then-Dutch Brazil since the 17th century have had a significant influence on the culture and economy of the island. The years before and after World War II also saw an influx of Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe. Many Portuguese and Lebanese also migrated to Curaçao in the early 19th century due to the financial possibilities of the island. East and South Asian migrants came to Curaçao during the economic boom of the early 20th century. There are also many recent immigrants from neighbouring countries, most notably the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Anglophone Caribbean and Colombia. In recent years the influx of Dutch pensioners has increased significantly, dubbed locally as pensionados.

Angels land Fuentes with two-year, $17.5M deal

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Reliever Brian Fuentes and the Los Angeles Angels reached agreement on a two-year deal Wednesday, perhaps giving the AL West champions a replacement for record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez.

Fuentes gets $17.5 million over the two seasons. There's a club option for $9 million in 2011.

The 33-year-old Fuentes was a three-time NL All-Star. The lefty was 1-5 with 30 saves in 34 chances and a 2.73 ERA for Colorado this season and then became a free agent. He struck out 82 in 62 2/3 innings.

Good trade for the Indians.

Seems like the Cubs are cutting payroll wherever they can to make a run at both Milton Bradley through free agency and Jake Peavy through trade.

Thumbs down

What a bum.

Indians sign Carl Pavano to 1-year deal
By TOM WITHERS – 46 minutes ago
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have signed free agent pitcher Carl Pavano, who was a four-year bust with the New York Yankees because of injuries.
Pavano, who will turn 33 on Thursday, signed a one-year deal with the Indians, who have been looking to add starting depth and hope the right-hander has put his injury problems behind him. Pavano spent most of the past four years on the disabled list with shoulder and elbow issues.
He made only 26 starts and went 9-8 with a 5.00 ERA with the free-spending Yankees, who signed him to a deal worth nearly $40 million before the 2005 season.
Pavano is 66-66 with a 4.23 ERA in 175 career starts for Montreal, Florida and New York. He had his best season in 2004, when he went 18-8 for the Marlins. He underwent Tommy John elbow reconstruction in 2007

Thanks for the memories Pettite.

Pettitte rejects Yankees' one-year offer
Andy Pettitte has rejected the Yankees' one-year, $10 million offer, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations, and there is no standing offer for now. Pettitte could return because some in the Yankees' hierarchy want him back. But in a winter of aggressive activity, the Yankees have been unwilling to bend for Pettitte. As an eight-year, $180 million deal for first baseman Mark Teixeira becomes official with a news conference Tuesday, the awkward Pettitte drama plays out in the background. The offer to Pettitte represented a 37.5 percent decrease from his $16 million salary last season. Pettitte considered the offer for weeks, then met with General Manager Brian Cashman in Texas after the winter meetings last month.

More from Gammons:

On whether the economy is affecting the free agent market for players like Manny Ramirez and Adam Dunn:
Gammons: In a state like Ohio . . . the economics are really bad. The Indians may have had the best offseason of anyone [signing reliever Kerry Wood, among others], and they can't sell tickets. On the front page of the Sunday New York Times, there was a story that 10-12 major Broadway shows are closing down this month, the most ever. And I kind of compare that . . . they're luxury items the way baseball games have become luxury items, and I think that may be a tell-tale sign about the economy. A couple of friends of mine who were playing back in the mid-'90s -- Harold Reynolds was one of them -- remember after the strike, they all had to go down to Florida and go to a tryout camp. And Harold went from making about $4 million a year to about $200,000, and I think you're going to see a lot of guys on March 1 calling around asking for jobs. For instance, I know Derek Lowe feels very strongly that if A.J. Burnett is making $16 million a year, why am I not making a year? But this is not arbitration, this is the market, and the fact is there's no market [for him] at $16 million. Now, there could have been. He could have gotten four-times-$15 million from the Yankees, but A.J. Burnett's agents stopped Scott Boras [who is Lowe's agent] and beat him to the Yankees. The Yankees wanted Lowe, but A.J. Burnett's agents did a better job.

On whether they Sox will sign Varitek, a Boras client:
Gammons: Well, if he calls and says, 'I'll sign at $2 million,' they might do it. If someone would just sign Varitek, the Red Sox would say, 'Thank you, we'll take the draft choices.' Now, I'm not sure anybody is going to sign him. One player said to me, 'Well, the Marlins might sign Varitek for $5 million.' No, they won't . . . they Marlins aren't giving up a first-round draft pick for Jason Varitek. Can't happen. I don't know what's going to happen . . . I still think the Red Sox will trade for a catcher, whether it's now or the 15th of March, and I don't know what's going to happen with Jason. It's too bad. How Scott Boras looked him in the eye and said, 'By the way, I turned down $10 million [in arbitration],' is beyond me. He turned down arbitration -- he would have made a minimum of $10 million, maybe $11 million. And there are a bunch of guys like that -- Jon Garland, Orlando Cabrera. There are a bunch of guys who are not even going to come close to what they made in arbitration.

On whether Varitek wanted to accept arbitration and Boras steered him a different way:
Gammons: I don't know. I know the players' association was strongly advising agents not to take arbitration. They felt that teams were trying to control players for one year at a lesser amount than they'd have to pay down the line. But again, if you're Jon Garland or Ben Sheets or Orlando Cabrera or Jason Varitek, it cost you a lot of money.

On how he sees the AL East at the moment:
Gammons: They actually asked me to do this last night on "SportsCenter." I took Tampa third, and I really like Tampa. Buster Olney disagreed -- he thinks Tampa is the team to beat with all of their young pitching . . . I don't see their bullpen coming close to doing what they did last year. I picked the Red Sox second, just because we don't know about the health of David Ortiz and Mike Lowell, and I think Josh Beckett will be fine. You never know about J.D. Drew's health. And the Yankees, with the innings that [CC] Sabathia and [Chien-Ming] Wang can give them and all the offense they should have, they clearly have to be the favorites.

Like I said earlier, Boras got his most prized free agent the best deal he could get, but in turn has cost several other of his clients millions and millions of dollars.

If A.J. Burnett is making $16 million per year, Derek Lowe should be too. No team but the Yankees can afford to do so at this point though.

The Varitek pieces are excellent as well.

Boras is praised as the best agent in sports, but he seriously screwed Tek! out of a ton of dough.

If Varitek plays three more seasons, he will not make more than he would have made next season had he accepted arbitration.

The Red Sox have all the leverage in the world and as Gammons mentions, no team is going to give up their first round draft pick for the enemic Jason Varitek. Not with the economy the way it is.

It's interesting that Gammons' third place team is Buster Olney' first place team.

This is going to be one helluva a divisional race all season.

When more reporters start making their predictions, I think you'll see an even amount on the Yanks, an even amount on the Sox, and an even amount on the Rays.

Once again, those poor Jays and O's. Those teams might be the best 90-100 loss teams in the history of the sport.

Oh noooo, he's done it to a few players, in fact he almost screwed up the A-rod deal with the Yankees, that's way they briefly parted ways.

A-Rod would be a Met today if it wasn't for Boras asking for the world.

Boras was on the MLB Network show "Hot Stove" the other night (if my girlfriend and I break up, it's MLB Networks fault) and he denied this and said he was involved all the way through with the Rodriguez/Yankee negotiations.

It was all media bullshit.

According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox have made John Smoltz there first priority on the pitching side of things.

I really would love to see Smoltzy added to the team. He'd be the perfect insurance for the pitching staff.

Well thats true...

Not sure why I believed everything he said while on the tube and disregard everything he says on paper.

Who freakin' knows with this guy. Your guess is as good as mine, but I'd imagine Boras had everything to do with that A-Rod contract. A-Rod doesn't have the smarts to get the Yankees into a bidding war against themselves.

A-Rod had a brief divorce with Boras during the last contract renewal, I think he hired Madonnas manager to handle the rest of the contract.

A-Rod reveals depth of rift with agent Boras
NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez's desire to go it alone in contract talks with the Yankees drove a wedge between him and his longtime agent, Scott Boras.
The player revealed the depth of the hard feelings in a "60 Minutes" interview that aired Sunday, telling the CBS news magazine that he and Boras are not speaking to each other.

Rodriguez worked as his own agent in netting another record contract for himself -- $275 million over 10 years -- which was finalized Thursday. The three-time AL Most Valuable Player removed Boras from the negotiations after Boras announced Oct. 28 that his client would be opting out of his current deal.

When asked by CBS' Katie Couric to expound on his relationship with Boras, Rodriguez took his time before finally replying, "The whole situation saddens me a little bit. There hasn't been much back-and-forth talking."
When asked if he and Boras are speaking, Rodriguez said, "Not right now." Asked if that could change, he told Couric, "We'll see." Rodriguez said he had no contact with Boras during negotiations with the Yankees.
"60 Minutes" said Boras declined to be interviewed.

Rodriguez's quotes ran in Monday's editions of the New York Post. The "60 Minutes" interview began with questions about the Mitchell report and steroids; Rodriguez said he's never used performance-enhancing drugs.
Boras has advised Rodriguez since before the player broke into the majors with Seattle, 19 days before his 19th birthday.

The 32-year-old Rodriguez won his third AL MVP award last month after hitting .314 with 54 homers and 156 RBIs. He said the way the opt out was handled -- during the Game 4 broadcast of the World Series -- was unsettling, and he understood why baseball fans and officials were upset with how it was handled.
"I was angered, upset, shocked, in disbelief," Rodriguez told "60 Minutes." "It was like a bad nightmare."

He said he and Boras agreed the slugger would opt out, but Rodriguez thought the move would be revealed after the World Series.
"When I realized things were going haywire, at that point I said, 'Wait a minute, I've got to be accountable for my own life. This is not going the way I wanted it to go.' So I got behind the wheel," he told "60 Minutes," according to the Post.
After opting out, Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said New York would not negotiate further with Rodriguez because his decision eliminated the $21.3 million subsidy the Yankees were to receive from Texas from 2008-10, a figure negotiated at the time of the trade.

Rodriguez said once he did get in touch with Steinbrenner and his brother Hal, an executive vice president with the Yankees, it didn't take long to reach an accord. But the Yankees made it clear from the start of talks they would negotiate only if Boras wasn't part of them.
"I have a lot to prove in New York," said Rodriguez, who has never reached the World Series.

I think Rodriguez and Boras created this "rift" as a means to get what they wanted.

In other words, the Yankees got played.
