MLB: Hot Stove 2008
So we've all heard about that lucrative offer the Dodgers made to Manny Ramirez the other day, but apparently that deal wasn't "long enough."
Dodgers' offer to Manny Ramirez might be too short - Los Angeles Times Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan says the Cubs have moved ahead of the Braves in the Jake Peavy trade talks. I really don't see how the Cubs would acquire him given how much suck there farm system is filled with. Cubs make bold move in Peavy sweepstakes - MLB - Yahoo! Sports The baseball offseason is heating up. Yummy. |

New York Post - The Yankees still appear to be interested in Brewers center fielder Mike Cameron and could move Melky Cabrera and pitching to acquire him.
Milwaukee officials have been asking around about Cabrera in an attempt to figure out why he struggled in 2008. Earlier this week the Brewers picked up the $10 million 2009 option on Cameron. Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports that the Yankees have asked Alex Rodriguez, who played with Cameron in Seattle, about him. |

SI.com - The Philadelphia Phillies are aggressively pursuing Matt Holliday, sources tell SI.com.
The Rockies surely would be interested in Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino, but it isn't known whether Philadelphia would consider moving him. The Phillies have several other well-regarded young players, including catcher Lou Marson, shortstop Jason Donald and pitcher Carlos Carrasco. Sources indicate that the Phillies have enough good young players to be able to do a deal for Holliday if the sides can agree. Several teams have shown interest, including the A's, Mets and Rays, but so far it appears the Phillies may have the best chance among those teams. *** And some news for Repro... |

"The White Sox and Yankees have talked several times, including at length late Wednesday night, perhaps about outfielder/first baseman Nick Swisher. Williams and Yankees GM Brian Cashman are close. Could Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano be part of a swap? He is owed at least $27 million for the next four years and has fallen out of favor. Swisher is due $21 million for three years."

So basically, the Yankees want to trade their two high profile guys coming into last season for Mike Cameron and Nick Swisher.
The funny thing is, Melky Cabrera is now shit and wouldn't be enough to acquire a guy like Cameron (who just got his $10 million dollar option for next year picked up). Also, in regards to Swish, that deal seems unrealistic as well. Cano is set to make: '09: $6M '10: $9M '11: $10M '12: $14M team option ($2M buyout) '13: $15M team option ($2M buyout) ...pretty much pricing him out of the range of any team not named the Yankees. Haha, god this new Yankee group cracks me up. |

That offer to Manny was their first offer. I am guessing they'll throw in a third year before all is said and done, but I don't think there will be as big a market for Manny as Scott Boras likes to think.

The sides are so far apart that the Blue Jays, Orioles, and perhaps the Yankees and other teams likely have moved ahead of the Dodgers in their pursuit of Ramirez. |

Burnett opted out of his deal and while he still says the Jays atop his list, other teams are going to price him out of the Jays range.
It hurts, but if the Jays use their money wisely, the battle for last place next year will be between the Orioles and Yankees. |

So are the Orioles.
If any team gives him more than a three year deal, that team is also retarded. |

Arm troubles have more than likely cost him his career. Marcum had Tommy John Surgery and will most likely miss all of next season. An interesting blurb I just read: "Maybe it would have happened anyway, but it needs to be remembered that the Jays had Marcum back pitching in games within a month when he went down with a sore elbow earlier this season and kept running him out there despite clearly diminished velocity and poor command, two signs that he was still injured. While it's hard to argue with the results the Jays have had on the mound lately, this is the third young pitcher they've had go down with a major arm injury in the last year. Dustin McGowan and Casey Janssen were the others." To an extent, you can add Chacin to McGowan, Janssen and Marcum. |

Sources: Yankees make record six-year, $140-million offer to CC Sabathia
BY ANTHONY MCCARRON DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Friday, November 14th 2008, 6:42 PM The Yankees made the first move Friday in what they hope will be a winter pitching spree by offering star lefty CC Sabathia a contract believed to be worth $140 million over six years, according to multiple baseball officials. If Sabathia ultimately signs for that much or more, it'd be the biggest deal for a pitcher in baseball history. Johan Santana inked a six-year, $137.5 million contract with the Mets last winter. The Yankee offer is "slightly better" than Santana's deal, according to one official. The Yankees aren't stopping there, either. In the next day or so, sources said, they will make first-strike offers to AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe, as well, in an effort to solidify their starting rotation. The 28-year-old Sabathia was a combined 17-10 last season for Cleveland and Milwaukee, going 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA for the Brewers after a mid-season trade. He won the 2007 AL Cy Young Award and has thrown 494 innings over the past two seasons. He is 117-73 with a 3.66 ERA in 254 career starts. |

Is this guy any good?
Yankees acquire Nick Swisher from White Sox in multi-player deal BY BILL MADDEN AND ANTHONY MCCARRON DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Thursday, November 13th 2008, 10:15 PM The Yankees Thursday filled their hole at first base by trading three players to the White Sox for Nick Swisher. Or maybe they added a capable outfielder who will instead see time at all three spots. Either way, the Yanks are delighted by the flexibility, athleticism and on-base potential the switch-hitting Swisher offers. If the season started today, GM Brian Cashman said Swisher would be the Yanks' first baseman. "But the season doesn't start today," Cashman added. "This allows us to be open-minded to anything that presents itself moving forward as we engage other clubs and agents." The Yankees sent pitching prospects Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez, both righthanders, and utility infielder Wilson Betemit to Chicago for Swisher and minor-league righty Kanekoa Texeira. Cashman said the Yankees had pursued Swisher in the past and began discussions with the White Sox before the GM meetings that were held at the beginning of this month. NEWS' HOT STOVE CENTRAL Swisher "was ecstatic" about the trade, according to his agent, Joe Bick. It was the first big move in what promises to be a winter full of them for the Yankees, who say their top priority is still starting pitching. The Yankees will present a megabucks offer to star CC Sabathia perhaps as early as Friday. While Cashman left open the possibility that the Yankees will pursue free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira, which would shift Swisher to the outfield, Swisher is a cheaper alternative at first in a winter when the Yanks figure to splurge on pitching. Swisher will make $5.3 million next season, $6.75 million in 2010 and $9 million in 2011. The Yankees hold a $10.25 million option for 2012 or a $1 million buyout. If Swisher finishes in the top five of MVP voting, the option increases to $12 million. Swisher, who will turn 28 on Nov.25 and is the son of ex-big leaguer Steve Swisher, batted just .219 in his only season with the White Sox. Cashman said that's the reason Swisher was available. "The fact of the matter is that he had his worst major-league season and that put him in play," Cashman said. "We did our due diligence and engaged our scouts and we believe and are hoping that '07 and '06 are more representative of Nick Swisher than '08. It was a risk we were willing to take ..." A major-league source said that the Yanks attributed Swisher's down year to a strained relationship with White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. Swisher could be Bobby Abreu's replacement in right if the Yankees acquire another first baseman. "He's a plus defensively at left, right and first," Cashman said. Swisher can play center field, too, but Cashman called him "an insurance policy" there rather than a regular. Swisher started 69 times in center for the White Sox last year and 47 times at first base. Texeira, a 22-year-old from Maui, was 6-3 with 21 saves and a 1.33 ERA in 51 combined relief appearances in Single-A and Double-A this year. Betemit was a spare part for the Yankees and hit .265 with six homers in 87 games. Marquez, whom Chisox GM Kenny Williams personally went to see pitch in the Arizona Fall League this week in preparation for the trade, was 8-8 with a 4.47 ERA at three levels of the minors and missed almost two months with a shoulder strain. Nunez, acquired from Washington at the trade deadline in July for Alberto Gonzalez, appeared in eight games at Double-A Trenton, going 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA. |

The Angels have matched the Yankees $140 million dollar offer and it appears as if nobody from this free agent class wants to play in New York. Today is a good day.

It's a great deal in comparison to what the Yankees gave Robinson Cano, but the Yankees are a terrible franchise and the Red Sox are the best in sports.
Pedroia isn't going to be making chump change the next two years and is guaranteed $40 million dollars. Odds are, he won't be MVP again. It's a solid deal for both parties. |
