NEW YORK - Alex Rodriguez has admitted using performance-enhancing drugs.
The New York Yankees star responded to Sports Illustrated’s report that he tested positive for steroids in 2003 by recording an interview Monday with ESPN.
“I did take a banned substance. For that I’m very sorry and deeply regretful,” he said.

His voice shaking at times, Alex Rodriguez met head-on allegations that he tested positive for steroids six years ago, telling ESPN on Monday that he did take performance-enhancing drugs while playing for the Texas Rangers during a three-year period beginning in 2001.

"When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure. I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day," Rodriguez told ESPN's Peter Gammons in an interview in Miami Beach, Fla. "Back then, [baseball] was a different culture. It was very loose. I was young, I was stupid, I was naïve. I wanted to prove to everyone I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time.

"I did take a banned substance. For that, I'm very sorry and deeply regretful."

Rodriguez's admission comes 48 hours after Sports Illustrated reported that Rodriguez was on a list of 104 players who tested positive for banned substances in 2003, the year when Major League Baseball conducted survey tests to see if mandatory, random drug-testing was needed in the sport.

Sources who know about the testing results told SI that Rodriguez tested positive for testosterone and Primobolan, an anabolic steroid. In his ESPN interview, Rodriguez said he did not know exactly which substance or substances he had taken. In 2003, there were no penalties for a positive result.

"Overall, I felt a tremendous pressure to play, and play really well" in Texas, the New York Yankees third baseman said. "I had just signed this enormous contract I felt like I needed something, a push, without over-investigating what I was taking, to get me to the next level.

"I am sorry for my Texas years. I apologize to the fans of Texas."

Rodriguez, who joined the Yankees for the 2004 season after a trade from Texas, said "all my years in New York have been clean." He also said it felt good to be honest about what he's done in the past.

"The more honest we can all be, the quicker we can get baseball [back] to where it needs to be," he said.

Rodriguez said he stopped taking substances after injuring himself at spring training in 2003 with the Rangers.

"It wasn't a real dramatic day. I started experimenting with things that, today, are not legal," he said, "that today are not accepted ... ever since that incident happened, I realized that I don't need any of it."

He said the culture earlier this decade of taking performance-enhancing substances was "prevalent." "There were a lot of people doing a lot of different things," Rodriguez said, noting that he wasn't specifically pointing out the Rangers.

Rodriguez said he was told by Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the MLB Players' Association, that he might, or might not, have tested positive in the 2003 survey. A source told ESPN on Saturday that Rodriguez knew he had failed the test.

"I had never heard anything since," he said. "Whatever I was experimenting with in Texas might have been OK."

Rodriguez also said of his 2007 interview with Katie Couric on "60 Minutes," when he denied ever using steroids, that "at the time, I wasn't being truthful with myself. How could I be truthful with Katie Couric or CBS?"

they are saying on SC right now that he was stacking test and primo...
they said that information was gathered right from the positive test...
can you really narrow it down to exact drugs based on tests, I always thought the tests just showed abnormally high levels of testosterone but not the exact drugs that were taken to cause the spike

Probably the best response he could have given.

Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

Alex Rodriguez admits to steroid use in interview with ESPN's Peter Gammons

By Bob Raissman
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Monday, February 9th 2009, 2:40 PM
Alex Rodriguez admits to using performance-enhancing drugs in an ESPN Monday night interview with veteran baseball reporter Peter Gammons, but says he did not know exactly what substance he was taking. In the first interview he has given since he was outed for steroids use by Sports Illustrated on Saturday, A-Rod apologizes for using the substances in what he described as a "loose era" for drug use in baseball.
He also told Gammons that he had not used steroids or other performance-enhancers since the 2003 season in which he tested positive for analbolic steroids in baseball's "survey" testing program.
"Peter, that's the thing," Rodriguez said. "It was such a loosey-goosey ear, I'm guilty of being negligent, naive, not asking all the right questions. To be quite honest, I don't know exactly what substances I was guilty of using."
Rodriguez said he used steroids from 2001-2003 and said that he has been clean since then. Baseball instituted a full-blown testing program in 2004 after more than five percent of players, including A-Rod, tested positive in the survey program. Those tests were seized by the federal government and have been the subject of ligitation every since.
Rodriguez's interview, which airs at 6 p.m. on SportsCenter, will set the tone for how he is viewed for the rest of his baseball career.
It's no surprise that A-Rod would make his first public statement on ESPN and with Gammons, who is known to go easy on interviews with players who have been accused of being steroid cheats. (IAN called it) Since SI's revelations, A-Rod has been taken apart, chunk by chunk, by a variety of media outlets. He's had few defenders but his interview will go a long way toward how he is peerceived in the future. If he is forthcoming and relatively believable, that tide might shift; if he is perceived as stonewalling or turning to the usual excuses steroids users offer, it will not.
Throughout A-Rod's Yankee tenure, Gammons has often defended him. In 2006, during a Yankees-Mets Sunday night tilt on ESPN, Gammons made light of A-Rod's inability to hit in the clutch and cast Yankees fans, who constantly bring up this deficience in A-Rod's game, as ingrates.
In 2007, after Rodriguez was photographed parading Joslyn Noel Morse, his stripper/friend, through the lobby of a Toronto hotel, Gammons avoided the moral issue of a man cheating on his wife. Instead, he said: "It's a very tough thing to be very rich, very handsome athlete today."
Gammons has been called on before to do "hot" interviews at ESPN. In 2000, after SI broke another controversial story concerning the racist rantings of John Rocker, Gammons was the first reporter to interview the fiery reliever.
Gammons interview was conducted in a very sympathetic manner. After the chat, Gammons told another reporter that the sympathetic tone of the interview "may be my fault. I'm not claiming that it's not my fault. I tried to be right down the middle with the interview and lay back. I didn't want to be pounding him."

Look at the people who admitted it. Giambi and Petitte, both are fine.

It is the liars who get the rath of scrutiny.

I am relieved that he admitted it. I was not mentally prepared to have to listen to endless debate and speculation about him, as we did (and still are) with Clemens and Bonds.

Sports fans are a forgiving bunch. I think A-Rod will come out of this stronger than before since he won't have anything to hide now. I bet he feels a weight has been lifted from his shoulders.

I am still looking forward to his first trip to Fenway this season to see him get the snot booed out of him.

They all should have learned from the great Pete Rose lying about his gambling.
