Forum hospitality

I am a member on MANY forums. (yes I have a lot of time on my hands). Why is it whenever a noob asks a question here (no matter how stupid it may be or how serious it may be) they always get like 20 sarcastic, stupid remarks before someone actually answers the question?

its not about taking sarcasm. If I ask "I feel this way after taking this suplement, anyone else experience this" and the first 4 replies are about how stupid I am for buying the product, then its not a "little sarcasm"

It's simple. It's because everyone on this site is either a dumbf@#k or a smart ass and we all lack basic social skills.

This is very true. From time to time you will get a huge jack-ass who will hit a nerve, but for the most part its all in good fun.

Truthfully - i agree with my brother, for the most part, many new members are met with sarcasm, jack-ass comments and occasionally hurtful comments that are very out of place to begin with. And more often than not, this kind of crap is doled out by the usual suspects - i don't even have to name names for you guys to know who they (you) are.

GG-Yes I do have to agree there are the usual suspects. There are a few members that we do have who contribute nothing but negative comments. However it makes IM not have the occasional smart comments. They are entertaining as long as they are not taken to far.

If it were up to me they wouldn't be here anymore - they rarely contribute anything useful and manage to piss of a bunch of people every day.

I think this website has an amazing amount of knowledgeable people and it is a great resource for people starting out in bodybuilding, strength training, fitness and healthy eating. But I hesitate to ever direct my clients or friends here because it is embarassing to have them sign on be met the way most members here are met upon arrival.

My brother comes in here, for the most part to get some help with his diet and he's trying to make an effort to get healthier along with his girlfriend. So he asks a bunch of typical noob questions, and the madness ensues, to no surprise. Sure he's made a few intentionally annoying posts (i take no responsibility and make no apologies - he's over 18! hahaha!) but his serious questions should not have to be subject to a bunch of dumbasses' sarcastic comments. Not just his - a bunch of other new members. I've been watching for a while now, and it's just pathetic.

Other than that one guy recently, who totally deserved to get ripped on because he came on here guns blazing, there is no reason to treat new members with such disrespect for asking a question that has been asked 478 times before.

Those who are rolling the eyes, and making the sarcastic comments were once noobs too, and I'm sure that if I search the site I can find THEIR dumb noob questions and send them a little reminder.

I'll be the first to say I have asked some dumb questions here before also and I took my lumps for it as well as the next. I agree that it has no place in areas such as training and nutrition and things of that nature. As far as an area as offtopic well thats completely different. That area seems to be there for anything and everything that can be tore apart and ripped on. that is not a serious place at all. Now I dont know where the thread starter posted and what was said, but if he indeed posted somewhere other than offtopic and was flammed, then I could see the problem.

Where are these posts. I rarely see a noob get flamed unless it's a spammer or a jerk.

Oh i know for damn sure i've asked some dumb questions! Hahahaha! One of my "dumb" questions ended up with p-funk having to make room for my stuff in his apartment: "what do you eat after cardio workouts as opposed to weights workouts"

----

"why am i so bloated and gassy?" (i typed that with one hand, while using the other hand to stuff my face with sugar free ice cream, loaded with sugar alcohols famous for their 'laxative effect').

And I'm sure that Trouble and Rob at SOME POINT in their lives didn't know everything and asked a dumb question somewhere in their histories. We just got the refined and educated versions of them by the time IronMagazine was conceived.

That say's a lot about this place. It's not as bad as it's made out to be.
I've been to other sites and trust me I have more fun watching the master piece theater on PBS. Other places it's a free for all, and in another place you have guys ganging up on you.

I think one of the reasons why, at times, people are overly sarcastic (at least in the training section) is because so many people ask a lot of the same stupid questions so when you hear the same exact question over and over again people get bored and sometimes go on the attack. Also, if someone asks a really l-o-n-g question the first time out and doesn't respect the fact that the Mods and members don't get a dime for their time. Or when noob's are rude to begin with before their ears are even wet. I ask dumb questions all the time but the great thing about IM is that even a dumb question gets at least one smart answer.

I agree with you GG. The place for the nonsense is in the General Interest Forums. When I came here a year ago, I didn't know a single thing about eating properly or weight training. I was lucky enough to have a mod take me under her wing and teach me what to do. We did most of it through PM and my journal. But, don't you think that the mods that monitor the serious forums have the ultimate responsibilty of squashing the bs in the forums they moderate? I have seen plenty of "participation" from some mods (the worst violator is in an other form of training now). If it's a problem, why not just put an end to it by eliminating the bad comments and commentators outside of general interest?
