Concerns for the health of this community

I have had at least 5 important questions about training over the past two weeks. I usually don't have question about training, because I have been here so long, and read more than I can remember about weight training. But for the first time, I have had to go elsewhere to get any decent information about sports and weight training.

This is pretty sad, imo. Hitting http://www.ironmagazineforums.com/search.php?do=getnew yields threads full of democrats suck, republicans suck, Obama sucks, terrorist this, explosions that, school shootings here, and gun control there.

There are only a handful of people in Training and D&N. No new lifeblood is coming in, and the site has stagnated more and more. Open chat is mainly full of people that never contribute to anything other than their political views. I have noticed a ton of regulars have left in the past three months, many of which contributed to the entire site, and not just open chat.

Basically, I feel that If I want to get media commentaries, I check IM. If I want to dig up some useful information sports specific training, I go elsewhere. I'm not very happy about this, because I have always held IM in the highest esteem. Its a damn shame.

The pendulum swings. You've been here almost as long as I have, you should know this by now.

Plus, a shit load of posts go into the Journals every morning and night.

This isn't the first time that this has happened, and it won't be the last.

People with the knowledge need to make an effort to reply more to the threads in the training, D&N, and Health forums. I know newbs are annoying, but they become the next crop of knowledgeable people. I didn't know shit when I first signed on. I really still don't know as much as I should, but I am able to help people here and there.

I was treated differently when I signed up compared to how the newbs are treated now. I got good and bad advice along with a little attitude, but at least I was acknowledged. Now, many post seem to go unanswered or without the question being properly addressed. By the way, I give major props to witchblade, fufu and gaz for being the only people who seem to be trying to help in the training forums.

this is very true, however I do know it seems that some long-timers are not being very active much, this is cyclical as well, hopefully some knowledgeable members will step up and fill in where needed...I am always looking for good mods as well.

You are dead on since i was thinking the same thing myself.

I was very lucky to have joined 3 years ago because members such as cowpimp, p-funk, mudge, LAM, Dale and several others were VERY helpful and steered me into the right direction. Also, cowpimp and p-funk wrote a lot of stickies for the training aspect and Jodi and Emma Leigh helped me out big time in the diet & nutrition forum.

Other than the fact that i am very busy nowadays and come on the boards at least once or twice per day, i have also noticed the increasing amount of non-training threads and a staggering amount of new members who never get any help. There are so many new threads in the training forum and there are always at least one or two replies as opposed to 20+ like it was years ago.

As for the online journals, i noticed p-funk no longer has one and cowpimp and some other well known members show up once in a while. I used to go to check out their training programs to give me new ideas of how to incorporate into my own but they are no longer around. Now i am forced to look elsewhere and develop my own programs without any help or feedback (i'm still learning) so it gets a little frustrating.

I noticed that the board is most active from March until September because that is when people go outside, swimming, take their shirts off so they want to get in shape and eat healthy. During the winter, it's a different story so people discuss topics other than training just to prevent boredom.

As far as suggestions go, there really isn't anything you can do. Things change over time and that's the way life is.

KelJu your point is taken. I learned a ton from this site and have found the site to be very helpful. I largely have left the training forums because I got tired of questions about creatine, or which whey is best. my favorites were always the teenagers looking for steroid advice after 3 posts. So because of this I've left those forums. My workouts have also morphed into more of a muay thai workout than a bodybuilding workout. I agree that it has died down a bit and the regulars should make a greater effort in keeping this a quality site.

I think that P-funk stopped posting in his journal because it became a dumping ground. Too many people posted to many non-relevant replies.

I'm like you, I really liked to read his journal.

Well, I can tell you that traffic is higher than it's ever been, IronMagazine.com and IronMagazineforums.cm get a combined total of 10,000+ unique visits every day, sometimes as high as 13k per day.

I guess it's possible that newbies use the search function and find answers which could limit new threads, I also wonder if the similar thread search actually reduces members from starting new threads, that is something I added back a few months ago.

I am open to any ideas or suggestions, and as I said always looking for new mods to help out.

I think Fufu, Witch, or Gaz would all make good mods for the training forum. They contribute the most and have good attitudes.

Can't speak for anyone else but I just don't feel like I know enough to be able to effectively answer a lot of questions. I have a good amount of knowledge but nothing on the level of Funk/Iain/Gazhole and such, and I don't want to give out bad information.

I am one of the people that basically stopped posting in the training (and diet) forums. I feel like no new information can be found there anymore. It's all noobs asking questions that have been answered a thousand times previously.

Just an observation...

Damn straight, everything I've learned has pretty much been from here, so i've decided to get elite membership as a way of saying thanks.

However, I agree with Kelju in that there is too much politics talk in OC. Different strokes for different folks, and of course it has a place here, but there seems to be too much, and the members doing a lot of the talk, don't even workout, or display any interest in fitness. *Rant Over.*

Thanks for all the flattery in here guys, i try my best

I too have learned most of what i know from listening and discussing on here with members here. Some of which sadly don't post much any more. After so much time here though, i think people like P-funk and CowPimp deserve to be able to leave it alone. They've contributed a hell of a lot to these forums over the years, as have others, so now its the turn of the newer members to take over.

Just my $0.02.

I do think that we need some discussion going about more advanced areas of training though. It's true that a lot of the training topics are the old "what is the best split" and other newbie-topics.

For my part at least i'll try get these sorts of more in-depth and interesting discussions going from now on. Perhaps itll give me some ideas for more training articles which i can also post up here.

Whos with me, brothers and sisters!? FREEEDOM!

Mate, in the one thread i engaged in discussion with you, you professed the belief that training different parts of the quadracep, and training different parts of the back were basically the same thing, even though the back is a collection of many muscles, and the quad is one muscle.

I feel the same way you do. I'm answering the same redundant questions. I feel like I'm wasting my time replying to somebody asking "how does this program look? I want to tone up." They usually only have 2 posts and never reply to the questions I ask them. Such as weight, goals, diet etc. I think I still do my part though. It depends a lot of the person who is posting. Like me, I wanted answers to my questions and got them here. That is why I'm still here. This board is very informative if you just take the time to read some of the posts and listen to what people have to say.

That's why I have a lot of the basic questions covered in my blog. I can just paste in the relevant link and be done with it.

naw the quad is a term used to refer to the muscles in the front of the upper leg....rectus femoris, vastus lateralis and medialis...I think you knew this.

(Irony?)

You forgot the vastus intermedius. Also, Gaz meant that they all function as one muscle during knee extension. You can't emphasize one over the other.
