Regular sleep habits are very important, I have read that the most important is the time at which you go to bed, more so than when you wake up. For me I must follow this rather closely or else I do not get a regular 7+ hours of sleep. I go to sleep around 9pm and wake up 4:30 am most days.
I have not needed sleeping pills for some time, and the effect is weakened already by the second dose, so they are not magical for me except for one good punch. If I let myself get out of wack with when I go to bed, then it is likely it will get worse and be that way for MONTHS which it has been. I've been religious about my sleep the past 4 weeks or so, I get up with NO PROBLEMS (I follow this law on weekends as well), and I have no problems concentrating or staying awake at work.
Basically what I felt I had to do with myself is manage my whole day, when I ate and when I slept and when I hit the gym, and thats what worked for me, put yourself in the military and dont let yourself break your sleep schedule by more than 30minutes or so, dont drink coffee for probably 4 hours or so before you go to sleep so that you can feel tired FULLY and be able to enter sleep, which for me is not always easy (my coffee intake is down to 2-3 cups a day which helps greatly).
To force myself into this new schedule quickly I removed any naps from my day, so day 1 went pretty well, and that helped set the tone for my first successfull week. I've had sleep issues my whole life, this works so far!
