I get a lot of stuff at Costco - the last batch of protein powder I picked up there because it was on sale; their Leanfit whey protein was only $25 for a 2kg tub; I get raw almonds there and the wild fish oil - 300 caps for $15 bucks gets me a month's supply of my daily 3g combined EPA/DHA. Melatonin and vitamin C are always cheap there, too, as are olive oil, balsamic vinegar and bocconcini, my latest addiction.

Bocconcini sliced thin, tomatoes sliced thin and basil is leading up to a mighty good sounding pizza.
Olive oil is a must from costco. I can buy two half gallons for 20.00. You are in Canada right built? Thanks again for your time.

I wouldn't touch the Costco brand fish oil. Not because it's tainted or anything -- I think a read an article showing that they tested it for metals and PCB's and such and it came out clean.
BUT, it's SUPER-low potency stuff, which means that it's got a very high ratio of saturated fat (and other non-EPA and non-DHA fats) than you want. 2 capsules, which is 2400 mg in total weight, only contain 720 mg of combined EPA and DHA. That's only about a 30% concentration. That's VERY weak. Compare that to something like Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, which is over 70% EPA and DHA, or Carlson Super Omega-3, which is 60%, and you very quickly see that you get what you pay for. Look for one that's comprised of at least 50% EPA+DHA. The concentration counts. |

I decided to do a little bit of investigation and here is what i came up with based on your comment.
Nordic lowest price i found was about 49.00 49.00 / 180 capsules = .27/capsule 1000mg capsules which is 65% potent of epa/dha Costco stuff 1200mg capsules 360mg of epa/dha which is 30%. 12.39 per bottle(coupon) / 375 capsules = .03304 In the end, bang for the buck goes to costco. Two capsules of costco would equal the potency of nordic (minus the fillers i guess) but for 20 cents cheaper. Broke college student FTW. I guess this brings me to a question. Should i be taking about 3 grams of fish oil per day or 3 grams of OMEGA 3 dha/epa per day(now knowing there is a difference) kris

Scratch my question. i found the answer. Its 3g of EPA/DHA daily. WHOA i have been cutting myself short, thinking that only 3 fish pills was all i needed.
Now a new question that i will most likely answer myself searching once again. Do i need to separate fish oil doses as well as vitamins in general or should i take them all first thing in the morning? 10 x fish oils @ 300mg DHA/EPA 2 x multi vitamin

Oh, there's no question that you can just take more Costco capsules to get you to the same amount of EPA and DHA more cheaply.
BUT, the difference is in health benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, etc. That "filler" that makes up the rest of the capsules in the case of the Costco product is largely saturated fat, which is counterproductive to what you're trying to accomplish by supplementing with omega-3's in the first place! You're trying to significantly affect your daily intake ratio of omega-3's to omega-6's and saturated fats for the better, and taking what is essentially a mixture of the good fats AND the bad doesn't help you a whole lot. See my point? (I hope I'm explaining that clearly.) Quote:

By the way, taking a low-potency fish oil formulation is still probably better than supplementing with none at all. It's just not nearly as effective/healthy as doing it with high-quality, high-potency stuff.

explained well, but i monitor my fats in every other aspect and my saturated even with the fish oil is well under what my daily recommended is.

Gotcha.
In that case, and as long as your blood work shows up with all things looking good (with regard to HDL/LDL and triglyceride levels), then you're probably just fine. If HDL isn't sufficiently high, and/or if triglyceride levels are too high, you could try one of two things: Raise your intake of whatever brand you're currently taking (that approach is a little more hit-or-miss), or switch to a more potent brand of fish oil. (Or switch to a more potent brand AND up the overall intake.) :-) But you're probably fine if all looks ok. |
