    How Much Protein ? ?

    A question regarding protein intake.

How much protein can be taken at once that the body will adequately be able to use?

For example, I take a whey protein shake immediately after my training session. 50 grams. Is that over doing it?

Whether it is a protein shake or food, I try to eat 5-6 times per day.

what is a good guideline for the amount of protein I should take at each meal???

50 grams is what I used to take after lifting, then I switched to about half that (25-30), and did not notice any difference. Of course, there is tons of information out there on the subject with many variables. It's always an interesting debate, however.

Proteins are not storein the body as chos or fats, and are absorben in quantity =< or 30gr at the time.

This is one of the reasons why you need to eat every 3h during the day.

I aim for 45g 7 times a day. It's better to give your body a little too much protein than not enough. JMO

You can read as many books and articles as you want but there is no set number of grams the body can absorb at one sitting. This will vary from one individual to the other. If I feel hungry, then I need to eat more.

No need to split it up into multiple meals. No need to eat every three hours, either.

Your body can only digest about 30 grams of protein at a time. That is why mixed protein supplements are better than just whey. Whey is fast digesting and taking more than 30g at a time of that is not necessary. If you have a mixed protein that has a fast(whey), mid(egg) and slow(casein) digesting proteins you can take more than the 30 grams and have it be beneficial. Some people can have problems with gut rot and smelly gas when taking in too much at one time.

The current protein supplement that I take is Gaspari Nutrition - Myofusion. The label states that in addition to whey, there are some longer digesting protein sources that ensure that a dose of this will be beneficial for 3-4 hours before having to ingest more protein (whether that be another shake or a food source).
I was using Muscle Tech nitro tech protein, but I was not crazy about the taste (very chalky) and it was on the pricey side as well.
I also use Gaspari Nutrition - Size On and take while I am working out. This has creatine, carbs, bcaa's, and a small dose of whey...

Supplement companies must make soooo much money on "slow-digesting" proteins.

I've read that it is .8-1.2g per kilo of bodyweight. Also, I don't buy the whole deal about only being able to assimilate X # of grams per 3 hours. I probably take in a bit more protein than needed, but nowhere near what some choose to take. At 250 lbs, I'd have to take in 375 grams per day if I followed the 1.5g per pound of bodyweight. Seems a touch excessive IMHO.

when they first came out I was a little leary of them. back in 2001 I ordered a custom blend from the protein factory that was like 40% caesin, 30% egg and 30% WPI. I usually take my shake about 11 pm. I was brushing me teeth one morning and made myself gag and I puked up a big ball of caesin and this was about 7am the next morning...I was sold on slowly digesting proteins after that

I think it depends on your size and the intensity of your workout. If your bigger and your workout is really intense your body should be able to absorb more protein than someone who did not work out with the same level of intensity that you did. I think people get to caught up in coming up with a specific number like fifty when in all honesty your protein absorption is dependent on many factors.

the body will digest whatever is in the GIT it does not know or care how many grams of this or that macronutrient it is digesting, that is it's job. the more fat free mass a person has and the more high intensity exercise that person partakes in the more protein their body needs and can UTILIZE. the greater the amount of muscle protein turnover from exercise the more supplemental protein is needed in the diet.
