    Body building confusions

Body builders eat protein supplements. I have heard that the quantity they are taking for thier muscles, is harmful for the kidneys. Is it true?

You start to cause harm to the body when your protein intake is about 2.3g per pound of lean mass, so depends on the person. I don't get that much.

If someone has healthy kidneys, then a high protein diet will not have negative effects. Of course, too much protein and I mean a lot, over a consistent period of time, MIGHT have negative side effects. In a review of over 100 studies, researchers concluded that high protein diets do not have a negative effect on a healthy renal system.

    Martin, W. F., Armstrong, L. E., Rodriguez, N. R. (2005). Dietary protein intake and renal function. Nutrition & Metabolism, 2.

I would like to conclude that, if you are consuming 1.5 g of protein per lb of body weight, then you should have no concern with kidney damage. I would say that you can even go much higher than this and still not be concerned. Hope this helps.

High amounts of protein may stress the kidneys yes. It is always a good idea to drink plenty of water, as that is your bodys filtration.
