    Ala

    I was wondering if anyone would recommend taking r-ala. Right now I'm bulking and eat a ton of carbs after my workout and was wondering if ala could be used to help create an insulin spike.

    I've talked to several people about this and they've all had separate opinions. Some say insulin spikes aren't good, others disagree? what da thinkl?

    More correctly stated, ALA will assist insulin in its action by raising cells sensitivity to its actions.

    But as gopro indicated insulin sensitivity is a different thing really. In general its good to have improved insulin sensitivity since less insulin will be needed to process glucose/sugar and that means it will not have to get as high and possibly NOT signal fat burning to turn off. In general resistance training increases insulin sensitivity all by its self (good news). There is some study that suggests that chromium picoliate also helps but some refute it...

    I should also mention that ALA is thought of as a "nutrient partitioning agent," or substance that will help shuttle nutrients toward muscle cells and away from fat cells. This is a very important effect.

    R-ALA is the better form to take. R-lipoic acid is the biologically active form of alpha lipoic acid. It has been called the mitochondrial antioxidant because it is a key component of mitochondrial dehydrogenase complexes. R-lipoic acid is directly involved in cell metabolism and redox states. R-lipoic acid crosses the blood brain barrier, and helps regulate neuronal calcium homeostasis, scavenges a variety of reactive oxygen species (ROS) while recycling vitamins C, E and glutathione. R-lipoic acid has been shown to regulate pro-inflammatory cytokines, and alter the expression of "toxic genes". R-lipoic acid has been used to treat diabetes and has been recommended as a "neuroprotective agent".
    There are at least four good reasons to take R-ala. First, as we age, our bodies lose the ability to synthesize enough Lipoic acid, right at the time when we most need it. Secondly, you cannot get sufficient quantities from your foods. Third, the body produces small amounts of R-Lipoic acid for metabolism that may not be of sufficient quantity to neutralize rising free radical concentrations. Fourth, a minimum amount is necessary for normal metabolic processes. Taking larger amounts, can have pronounced therapeutic effects.
    Remember, alpha lipoic acid is contains 50% of the natural R-form and 50% of the unnatural S-form. Most of the therapeutic value lies in the R-form.

    I think I jsut may try the R form of ALA now that I have used up all my last batch of suppliments. Anyone recommend a good brand?

    Also, Gopro, have you heard of any sort of aromatase inhibitors. I probably got the spelling wrong but I am told as we age estrogen can really screw up our growth potential and older guys should look into this kind of suplimentation.

    Sure, Aromadex by VPX for one, and 6-OXO from Ergopharm. They both will inhibit aromatization and boost natural test levels.

    when should i take them?

    i'm assuming i should take one with my afternoon meal (probably my biggest meal about 1hr30 before my workouts) and 1 with my PWO shake?

    that would be 1000mg for the day, that sound alright?

    Most generally use 100mgs of r-ALA per 50g of carbs. Some people think that it should be taken 20 minutes prior to carb meals, although Im not sure it makes a difference than if taken just prior to the meal.

    Don't worry about it...nobody around here should be messing with insulin anyway...not unless you are already and IFBB pro or on the brink of it (and maybe not even then).

    The reason why I asked is I just ordered a bottle of r-ala yesterday from 1fast. I read a few things on r-ala and it seemed to be a great supp to add. So is r-ala dangerous?

    first off lol@youg d...second..i think the aromadex is 10x better than 6oxo...for some reason pills dont work well on me...liquid forms seem to work alot better and quicker....but the aromadex bust my shoulders out with small bumps for like 2 weeks then go away...

    R-ala is not dangerous, using it with insulin injections may be.

    young D, I would imagine you have the racemic version, not R-ala if it is in that dosage. Next time try to get the R isomer, but until then, I would say 200mg before 3 different meals containing carbs is sufficient for what you have. I have no idea how you would split the dosage if you have caps, but I guess you could empty the caps and dissolve them in a solution nad break it up that way.

    so with the r-ala you would say only after postworkout?? and shouldnt it only be taken when eating your highest carb meals? or do u do what gopro said and take 200 mg 3 x per day..which is the best way?

    I take 100mg 3 times a day with meals, but I respond well to it. you should assess your tolerance and then go from there, so start with 100mg 3 times a day and see how it goes.
