Newbie with a couple questions

Hi,

I'm new to the board..

I'm 21, 5'7 about 150 pounds.

I have been working out since I was 14, but have never really been able to gain mass as I have a small frame.

I'm thinking of taking protein shakes. What's the difference between whey and soy protein?

Also, how often should I take protein shakes? And even though it's a controversial topic here, how much protein should I intake? And should it vary from workout days and off days.

Thanks.

Would also like to know about protein brands. Should I look for a particular brand or look for something in the nutritional info?

Whey protein has a better amino acid profile than soy, it is higher in BCAA's and glutamine and is better in my opinion as far as bodybuilding goes.

Brand does make a difference as you want to make sure that you are getting a quality product. I prefer AST brand but I will list some other good one's:

VPX
Dorian Yates
Optimum
Labrada
MetRx
EAS

these companies all make good quality protein powders

What about Prolab? I've seen some decent priced prolab 5lb protein tubs.

And what about taking whey after workouts and soy on other days?

Casein and egg protein are better at night - slow release. You're better off getting your diet in check and upping calories from protein rich foods and EFA's and carbs to fuel your workouts. Don't worry about getting lean if you want size. EAT!

Is it slower release than soy?

So I should just eat eggs for egg protein? What's casein?

I'm new to this forum. Just gotta say that it rocks. I drink lean body meal replacement shakes. They have 45grams of protein. I drink like 3 a day(They're damn tasty too). Along with a few actual meals.

I take Labrada's Lean Body shakes. Try the chocolate and the chocolate peanut butter flavor.

There's no need to do that, just stick to whey. I've actually heard that soy can raise estrogen levels which is defintely not what you want at this point, but I can't verify that for sure. I use Protien U.S.A.'s Pro-rated protein, I love it but it's not a well known company so I think I'm the only one here who uses it.
Here's a comparison chart between pro-rated and other proteins:

and here's a place to get it real cheap
