glutamine

i take a teaspoon of glutamine after my workout and b4 sleep. can i take while im eating or just by itself?

I take 5grams with my shake in the morning, 5 grams post work-out again with a whey protein shake, and 5 grams before bed with my milk/egg protein shake. (15grams per day)

You really should not take glutamine on an empty stomach by itself.

I copied and pasted this:

Glutamine when ingested on an empty stomach acts as a growth hormone secretagogue via its excitotoxic metabolite glutamate. Glutamate acts by stimulating the hypothalamus to secrete growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) which causes the pituitary to release growth hormone (GH). Sharp increases in brain glutamate levels are hazardous to the brain and nervous system and glutamine GH supplementation may create sharp increases in brain glutamate levels. Glutamine GH supplementation therefore poses a risk to the nervous system.

1 to 2 teaspoons a day is too much? (5 to 10 grams)

I take the same amount at the same time. I always take it with food. I've never been under the impression that you could take too much glutamine.

i take 10 grams but 15 is a very typical dose for men. not at all high

I do the same. I don't think 15 grams of glut is too much. Where did you read this babs??? I'd be interested to know if its true.

Glutamine is too expensive. But I occassionlly take some.. from my gym's shakes etc.

That's most likely L-Glutamine. Glutamine Peptides are the way to go. (absorbed better than L-Glutamine) Not so expensive if it truely does what they say.

I take like 2 1000mg L-Glutamine tablets every night. The directions say that you can take between 1-4 tablets twice a day.
My bottle was pretty expensive...11.00 for only 100 tablets.. (50 day supply) if taking 2 a day.

Since 1000mg is equal to 1gram, it only recommends up to 4 grams a day. So in light of that, I would say that anything over 4-5 grams a day would probably be more than you need.

Thanks Prince, I will most definately check into that.

I Also found a good source of info regarding L-Glutamine/Glutamine. This source recommends up to 8 grams a day for most normal people. But it states that for patients taking Ibuprofen have taken up to 20 grams to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract. And up to 40 grams have been taken to sustain the immune system of aids patients. Hopefully we don't have any of those here

there is no reason to go over 20 grams for weight training... I heard the pimp daddy GoPro uses 20 g's a day... so if it's good enough for him, I'm pretty sure it's good enough for us mortal folk...

I've heard of body builders using up to 10 grams of L-Glutamine a day, but personally I just follow the label and word of mouth. Between the two, I have not found any legitimate reason to use more than 8 grams a day. Unless there are legitimate reasons to use more, there is no need to throw your money away. Now in many cases you use a bit more than what the label says for body building purposes, but when they recommend 8 grams max and to use 20 grams seems very extreme to me. I'm sure our friend GoPro must have a legitimate reason for using so much, but until I spoke to him I certainly wouldn't say that because he takes it, it is good enough for us. If the label recommends 8, I would say 10grams a day would be more legitimate. But if 8 is sufficient, then why take 10? Again it could be money down the drain. It would be an interesting question to ask Gpro for his recommendation. If he recommends 20, the I would trust his judgement, but not until then.

Right, that is 1.5 grams before and after... total 3 grams.
That is a far cry from 20 grams...
